Property code: OC-WA307

This lovely little 18th-century cottage is set in the fishing village of Sandsend on Yorkshire’s heritage coastline, where the North York Moors meet the coast. Head to a cosy pub for a meal or cook for yourself in the sweet galley kitchen. If the tide is out, why not walk the 3 miles to Whitby and enjoy fish and chips for lunch? This cottage is set back off the main road and enjoys fine views down the coast towards the romantic ruins of Whitby Abbey, said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Mulgrave Woods Estate is less than a mile away and has easy circular walks past waterfalls and a ruined castle, whilst Sandsend Beach has rock pools at low tide and is a great place to find fossils. In summer, an area of the beach is zoned off for swimming.

The cottage was originally built as a home for a servant of the Marquis of Normanby, who once owned the whole of Sandsend. You enter the property through a picket fence before reaching the front door, which opens directly onto a welcoming lounge/dining area with a large bay window and an electric wood burner-effect stove. The galley kitchen is to the rear of the property and is well-equipped to prepare a lovely home cooked meal. A steep stairway leads from here to the first floor, where you will find a simply lovely twin bedroom and pretty coastal-themed bathroom with a shower over the bath. Take an additional steep flight of stairs to the main bedroom, which has a king-size bed and an impressive, pitched ceiling giving the room a romantic and cosy feel.

Whilst there is no outside space, you are right on the doorstep of a stunning beach which is perfect for making the most of the great outdoors.

  • 2 bedrooms, 1 twin and 1 king-size
  • 1 bathroom with a shower over the bath and WC
  • Electric oven and grill, gas hob, fridge with freezer compartment, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine
  • Smart TV, DVD player
  • Mobile signal is variable
  • On-street parking on a first come first served basis; car park 100 yards away (free in the winter)
  • Shop 0.2 miles, pub 0.1 miles, beach 40m
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards

Lovely cosy & comfortable cottage, with lots of character, minutes away from the sea. The property is well presented. The tea, coffee and biscuits were very welcome. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

Great location right next to the beach and not too many steps to get to the property, we were also able to get parked quite close by which can be very difficult in other seaside locations nearby. The cottage had everything we could have needed and the addition of lovely soft towels was welcome. The cottage was very homely and comfortable but narroRead morew stairs may be a problem for younger children or people with less mobility. Hide

Really loved this place and free parking all through the stay. Only thing I found difficult was the steepness of the stairs but that is down to my own health conditions. If you have a dog who likes a yard there isnt one but the sea and beach are seconds away so for us it wasnt a problem. All in it is an excellent place to stay and some beautiful waRead morelks. Hide

A lovely cottage, clean, well equiped and maintained, dog friendly Just a stone's throw from the beach and car park. Great for walks along the beach to Whitby, the costal path and the Mulgrave estate. Pubs and cafes are only a short walk away. Good base to explore NY coast and Moors.

Lovely cosy little cottage in a perfect location just near the beautiful beach. Very clean and well equipped - also interesting to read all about the long history of the place and see all the old photos in the coffee table book. Had a really relaxing weekend with fabulous weather and didnt want to go home! Well be back, thank you.

The cottage is dated and needs a face lift. Not value for money -725 per week, no where near. i had to take out of the plastic inlay in the cutlery cupboard all the cutlery, the inlay was in a disgusting hygiene state, stained, dirty and wet. I left the inlay out and sent a text message to the number stated on the information sheet - no answer to mRead moree. This was a very poor experience. Hide

Ground floor very comfortable, kitchen well equipped and served our purpose. For me the bathroom is too large for the property and would be better served if there was no bath and a walk in shower. However the property is well positioned in the village and therefore is good for a family holiday.
