A beautiful converted barn in Swaledale, close to the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, this is a fabulous retreat for a couple wanting to get away from it all and explore this fabulous area. Just 2 miles away is the quaint village of Gunnerside, conveniently located on the Coast to Coast walk, and with a lovely local pub. While in the village, be sure to follow the 2.5 mile trail up Gunnerside Gill, a narrow, rocky gorge, where fascinating signs of the village's lead-mining past can be seen. The vibrant market town of Richmond is 18 miles away, and boasts an impressive castle, cobbled market place and Georgian theatre, as well as plenty of quirky shops and art galleries and a good choice of pubs, restaurants and bars. Every Saturday there is a traditional outdoor market, joined by a popular farmer’s market once a month. The town is also the gateway to wonderful and unspoilt countryside, making it an ideal base for cycling, walking and other outdoor pursuits. A popular 4-mile circular walk from Richmond takes you along the banks of the River Swale to the ruins of Easby Abbey, home of the white monks, and back via an old railway track.

This historic barn has a light, airy and modern feel inside, with an open-plan ground floor that encompasses a smart and comfortable lounge, a dining area and a high-quality kitchen (with quartz worktops), all tastefully decorated and encompassing every convenience for an enjoyable holiday. The highlight of this space is surely the huge window, with gorgeous views over the meadows, hills and fells, besides which the dining table has been placed. A timber staircase leads to the first floor, where the light and spacious bedroom, with original beams, has plenty of storage space and more of those wonderful views. Its en-suite bathroom is a luxurious, contemporary room with underfloor heating.

To one side of the barn is a lawned area/meadow with garden furniture – a fabulous place in which to relax and breathe in the fresh Yorkshire air.

We had an excellent stay in the barn. The accommodation was very comfortable and very well appointed with everything we needed, even down to a "toast rack" brilliant. We have stayed in many properties over the years and have always found a simple thing like the toast rack, has always been lacking. Although the barn is situated along the road we werRead moree not disturbed. We saw very few cars go past while we were there. The outlook from the barn is fantastic. The meadow was so very pretty, in full flower. The river walks, that basically start from the door where beautiful and easy to follow. There are so many places to visit, just not enough days. Whatever the weather you must venture out as it changes in a blink of an eye. We would highly recommend Mill Barn and would happily return in the future. Thank you very much for providing and sharing such a wonderful place. Hide

We had one huge problem with Millbridge Barn - we had to leave it! We were so warm, comfortable and happy there. We've had an amazing two week holiday, in huge part also thanks to the weather with which we were unbelievably fortunate to have sunshine and blue skies virtually every day. This made for amazing walks, so many straight from the door. ThRead moree pubs at Gunnerside and Muker are not to be missed. Hawes and Reeth lovely little towns. Our second time staying at Millbridge. Warm and well equipped, we love the location, quiet yet not too far from the village in either direction. With parking right next to the cottage as well, there is never any concern about being out for the day and trying to get back near to your accommodation (an issue we have had in the past at other places).Read more Already looking to book again for next year! This is a wonderful base for two people. The cottage is extremely well presented with everything that we could have possibly needed. The location is spectacular with amazing 360 degrees views. Its remote but for those seeking absolute peace then this is the place. Its a great base for sightseeing and walking. There are lots of lovely local pubs inRead more the vicinity which get crowded at the weekend but are great during the rest of the week. The locals we met were very hospitable and extremely friendly. We really felt part of the community during our stay and not mere tourists. We will definitely be back! Hide

Very well equipped modern accommodation with (almost) everything you need. The bedroom is very spacious with a nice comfortable bed. The bathroom is a good size and the underfloor heating adds a luxurious touch. The living space downstairs is very good with plenty of room and the kitchen has lots of storage (which is not normally the case with holiRead moreday cottages) as well as plenty of prep areas. There are some user manuals for some of the kitchen appliances, but it wasn't obvious as to where these are kept. We found them after searching all the cupboards/drawers. Also, the recycling instructions don't match what is available, but we separated everything as best we could. When it is a clear night the sky is amazing, but the lack of comfortable outdoor seating and a fire pit/chimenea means you get a cold, stiff neck looking up. This might be different in the middle of summer. Parking directly outside the barn entrance was helpful as suitcases with wheels need to be carried across the loose stone/gravel path. Also, it can be very difficult to turn round a large SUV. Hide
