The historic hamlet of Gayle sits astride a series of small waterfalls at the northern end of Sleddale, surrounded by a tapestry of rolling hills, green fields and dry stone walls. A haven for walkers and nature lovers, it’s just south of bustling market town Hawes – follow the walk between the two and the Wensleydale Creamery makes a fabulous refuelling stop. There are plenty more places to eat alongside an array of traditional stores in Hawes, famous as the highest market town in England and home to the Dales Countryside Museum. Have your camera ready when you drive the scenic Buttertubs Pass across the high moorland between Hawes and Thwaite (7.5 miles), which is well-known as a stopping place on the Coast to Coast, Pennine and Herriot Ways. Head east instead, where Aysgarth (8 miles) is best known for its three-stepped Falls, especially dramatic after heavy rainfall.
Located among a cluster of mellow stone properties and around 400 metres from the beck that cascades through Gayle, this pretty two-bedroomed cottage was completely renovated in late 2025. Off-road parking means you can unpack at your own pace, leaving coats, boots and outdoor gear in the entrance hall. To the left is the first of your social spaces, a striking kitchen/diner with traditional flooring, contemporary cabinetry and all the essentials for a fuss-free self-catering stay. A central island unit sets the scene for impromptu chats and coffee breaks, while the rustic dining suite is positioned close to double doors that open onto the patio. A stylish shower room sits conveniently off the entrance hall; next door, the ground-floor bedroom has an inviting single bed and plenty of space for your belongings. Follow the stairs to the upper floor, where the lounge has soft carpeting underfoot and a Smart TV for home-style entertainment. A pretty bathroom with period styling plus a king-size bedroom complete the first-floor layout. Underfloor heating throughout ensures comfort at any time of year.
Enjoy a breath of fresh country air from your private patio area – stretching across the front of the property, it comes with seating and is easily accessed from the kitchen/diner if you’ve food and drinks in hand.
