Whitby's narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help Whitby's smugglers evade government revenue men and tax collectors. They're a unique and much-loved feature of this picturesque town. Be prepared as you walk under the arched alleyway into the Rose and Crown Yard to gain a real sense of this ancient sea town’s authentic maritime history. It is one of the oldest, narrowest and most twisting of Whitby's Gothic yards.

Probably the most visited and most loved of Yorkshire's seaside resorts, Whitby is an idyllic location for a holiday. With its seaside heritage, excellent restaurants, independent shops and a host of bars and cafes along its medieval streets, it has so much to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Playing host throughout history to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town's rich history is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda's Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby's crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries. Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll's work, it was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Whitby is set on the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline; a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. That's not to say it's stuck in the past; in fact, Yorkshire's coastal villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside upmarket restaurants and champagne bars.

Nearby Robin Hood's Bay (6 miles) is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend is 3 miles away, a gorgeous little seaside village which is well worth a visit during your stay. With its handsome promenade, long stretch of beach, several excellent eating options and a world-class day spa, you could happily spend your whole holiday here. Staithes and Runswick Bay are also under 10 miles away, each with its own unique charm.

Head inland from Whitby and you can be in the heart of the North York Moors within minutes. Take a tour of the impossibly pretty towns and villages in the area, including Egton, Danby, Castleton and Rosedale. Or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg; we guarantee on a clear day it will take your breath away.

The apartment is extremely clean and furnished to a high standard. The kitchen is well equipped. Good central location, although a bit noisier than expected in the evenings. The instructions from holiday cottage need updating as they are not very clear how to get into the property on arrival but the guy from the property management company was loveRead morely and very helpful. Would recommend to friends but would warn them there is no washing machine if they were coming for a longer stay. Hide

The apartment was immaculate with brand new equipment and modern furnishings. The location was very central and convenient. Thoughtful items, like plenty of dishwasher tablets, tea and coffee were provided. It proved an ideal base and we were so comfortable we ate in most nights.
