This charming cottage in the delightful village of Muker in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the ideal base for families looking to explore the surrounding countryside. With the River Swale running through the village, it is at the heart of Swaledale, which is one of the northernmost valleys in the national park - famous for its heather-clad moors, picturesque waterfalls and, in particular, its meadows of wildflowers. People come from all over the world to see the fields come alive with every colour under the rainbow, a unique phenomenon due to the fact that the local farmers don't use chemicals in the fields. Calendar highlights include Swaledale Festival, which takes place in May, and sees two weeks of amazing music, art, walking and culture, whilst the Muker Show takes place every September. Despite its rural location, the village has its own pub, cafe, shop and art gallery, which makes it a great place to return to of an evening when you're too tired to cook. Guests also have the choice to explore the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which lies just north of the property and offers yet more stunning landscapes and a range of wildlife to discover.

Sympathetically renovated, this traditional cottage has many original features and natural materials on show which combine with neutral palettes and contemporary decor to create a stylish, comfortable home.

On entering the property, you'll find yourself in the open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner with its stone floors, exposed beams and inglenook fireplace. With a wood burner as a focal point, the lounge is a comfy place to snuggle up of an evening, whilst the kitchen is well-equipped for conjuring up a meal or two. The dining area is tucked away in front of a window with natural light flooding the space. There is also a utility room on the ground floor. Underfloor heating warms the stone floor for added comfort.

Upstairs, there are three gorgeous bedrooms all decorated in calming colours that add a sense of light and space. There is a king-size room with an en-suite shower room, as well as a twin and a single room. Completing the accommodation is a wonderful contemporary family bathroom.

Outside, there is an enclosed courtyard garden to the front of the patio where you can enjoy a morning coffee or an evening meal whilst watching the world go by and chatting to the locals.

The scenery all around is real picture-postcard stuff, with ancient old drystone barns peppering the dramatic hills and valleys. And with no streetlight pollution for miles around, the stars at night are dazzling. There are many towns and villages to visit nearby.

The charming village of Low Row (5 miles) is just one of many that offer incredible views of the surrounding landscape of Swaledale. A walker's paradise, there are some beautiful trails such as the circular walk around Blades (5.5 miles away) and the famous Coast to Coast Walk that passes nearby. This is also supreme cycling country with routes from most of the villages. Why not challenge yourself and some friends to take on the mighty Buttertubs Pass, 5.5 miles away.

Aysgarth (10 miles) boasts many great options to eat and if you visit in spring, you can''t leave without a visit to Freeholders'' Wood where bluebells, anemones and primroses will be in full bloom.

Reeth (9 miles) is often referred to as ‘the capital of Swaledale''. It is a delightful village with some stunning panoramic views and scenery. It also has a range of shops and restaurants to choose from and a regular market. There is plenty of heritage to find out about as Reeth once played a vital role in the lead-mining industry. Lots of outdoor activities are available at centres in the area, such as fishing, canoeing, caving, climbing, and abseiling.

Larger Richmond (22 miles) is a charming market town on the borders of Wensleydale and Swaledale. It boasts an 11th-century castle, fine Georgian architecture, a historic Georgian theatre and a large cobbled market square as some of its many attractions. There are also lots of tearooms and restaurants. The River Swale runs through the town and less than a mile across the river are the River Swale Waterfalls. You can walk in either direction along the river and deep into the countryside. We recommend exploring the restored former Richmond Railway Station which has lots to entertain young and old.

We also recommend taking a tour of the Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Dales Trail, a circular route which passes through Low Row and takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery in the UK. This land of Viking place names, waterfalls, rivers and ravines is like nowhere else on the planet, don't forget to take the camera. And on the way back down you can stop for lunch at one of the amazing pubs in the area.

The historic village of Easby, home to Easby Abbey is just 20 miles away and is the perfect spot for a picnic. As are Aysgarth Falls (10.5 miles) which were featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves!

For surreal entertainment, visit the quite brilliant Forbidden Corner, an attraction full of statues and hidden surprises, 19 miles away near Middleham.

Lovely cottage in a fantastic location if you enjoy walking. Well located near to The Farmer Arms which serves delicious food. The cottage is very well decorated with modern appliances. I wouldn't recommend to anyone who is thinking of renting with a dog though - the property doesn't have a back or side garden, only the patio paved area on the fronRead moret - we found it very difficult with our little dog who jumped the front wall twice on the first day, straight on to the road to see other dogs. Lovely cottage well equipped and nicely furnished with good taste, and a quality feel.
