Elegant barn conversion set in a countryside location close to Richmond, perfectly situated to explore the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, home to charming towns, villages and attractions aplenty.

Nestled in the quintessential village of Brompton-on-Swale on the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales, this gorgeous former barn is an idyllic retreat for four guests and an accompanying canine. Embrace country life with a pub on your doorstep and a plethora of walks at your disposal. A short 5-mile drive will bring you to the bustling streets of Richmond with its wonderful history and heritage.

Cross the cobbled courtyard to find your bolthole, a charming building with a traditional Yorkshire stone exterior and tranquil surroundings. Despite being situated within the grounds of the friendly owner’s home, you will be guaranteed privacy for spending quality time with your loved ones. The quirky layout reveals a labyrinth of tastefully decorated rooms with original heavy wooden doors and sumptuous soft furnishing throughout. Character beams and warm wooden floors hint of the property’s past, yet the interiors are chic and contemporary with a muted colour palette and complementary furniture, and accessories that denote a French farmhouse vibe.

You’ll feel at home from the moment you venture inside the lounge to curl up on the comfy sofas with a hot drink in hand. Comfortable throws and scatter cushions create a cosy ambience for snuggling up in front of the TV, but the focal point of the room is the exposed stone fireplace with its crackling wood burner-effect electric fire. The lounge leads through to a little nook where you can snuggle up in an armchair with your favourite book or simply look out across the courtyard on sunny mornings.

Cock up your shopping from earlier in the day in the lovely kitchen space. This room is compact and simply presented with bright tiling and cabinetry, but you’ll certainly be able to find everything you need here. The spacious hallway reveals the dining room that’s tucked in an alcove, a delightful setting for enjoying celebratory suppers by candlelight.

Refresh yourself in the downstairs bathroom, taking some time out for a long bath before climbing the stairs in search of your stylish sleeping quarters. There are two bedrooms to choose from, the first of which is a bright and sophisticated room with a king-size bed dressed with crisp sheets and cushions. The other bedroom can be tailored to suit your party needs as the twin zip-and-link beds can be converted into a king-size bed on request. The ceilings slope gently so take care of reduced head height when you wake to greet the day.

You’ll have exclusive use of an attractive garden space complete with a BBQ for al fresco meals in the sun and toasting marshmallows at dusk. Pour a glass of wine and take in your surroundings – why not take out a blanket and stargaze? Off-road parking is available for two cars, so you’ll be able to adventure with ease.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

The property is located just 5 miles from Richmond, a charming market town studded on the borders of Wensleydale and Swaledale. It boasts an 11th-century castle, fine Georgian architecture, a historic Georgian theatre and a large cobbled market square as some of its many attractions. Stroll into town for a cup of Yorkshire tea at one of the many tea rooms there or pop over for dinner at one of the excellent restaurants.

The gorgeous River Swale runs through the town, and just across the river, less than a mile away are the River Swale waterfalls. You can walk in either direction along the river and deep into the countryside without having to go anywhere near the car. We also recommend exploring the restored former Richmond Railway Station which has lots to entertain young and old including a small cinema, cafe/restaurant, gallery, microbrewery and artisan bakery.

Richmond is also known as The Gateway to the Dales so expect stunning Dales scenery within minutes of leaving the town. Peppering this glorious countryside are countless attractive little towns and villages and if you enjoy a bit of surreal entertainment, how about a visit to the Forbidden Corner? This attraction is full of statues and hidden surprises, 17 miles away near Middleham.

The historic village of Easby, home to Easby Abbey, is just 3.5 miles away. Set on the banks of the River Swale, the Abbey is the perfect spot for a picnic in the summer months. There are lots of other breathtaking historical sites to explore in the Dales, including the stunning Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, 26 miles, a World Heritage Site.

This is a superb area for walkers and cyclists with many routes from the doorstep or just a short distance away including Alfred Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast Walk which passes close.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Dere Cottage. It was beautifully furnished and spotless. The owners were very welcoming and responsive to any needs. Would definitely recommend.

Such a lovely and homely cottage, truly a home away from home. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay here. We went on some lovely walks which were only a 30 minute drive away and will definitely be returning to visit again. Everything that you could possibly need this cottage is equipped with and more.
