This property is set in a pretty little hamlet (complete with a local pub) in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. This particular Dale is famed for its daffodil walk when each Spring the river banks come alive with the yellow flowers, said to be planted originally by the monks who settled on this land many hundreds of years ago.

Lesser known than its Yorkshire cousin, the Dales, the North York Moors are full of breathtaking scenery and on your doorstep. This glorious expanse of heather-clad countryside is simply stunning, and it's well worth taking some time to explore it properly. The Moors cover an area of almost 600 square miles and, like the Dales, you can easily find yourself miles from anywhere relatively quickly. But there is something distinctly more civilised and less remote about the Moors. There is a sense of wilderness, particularly on top of the high central moorlands, but it’s cast in comforting soft focus.

This is serious walking country, so if you enjoy donning the old walking boots and striking out into the countryside, this cottage is in the perfect location. There are also countless picture-card villages to explore within a few miles including the chocolate box Hutton-le-Hole (6 miles), Rosedale Abbey (6 miles), Danby (9 miles) and Goathland (30 miles) to name just a few.

Close by, you also have the fantastic town of Helmsley only 14 miles away. At the heart of the town square is a statue of Lord Feversham and if you want to indulge some more architectural desires, the grand Nunnington Hall a few miles south east of the town is another grand abode worth a peek.

Helmsley is a foodies heaven, packed with exquisite tearooms, cafes and organic delis. It's also surrounded by some of the best gastropubs in the UK. Tucked alongside these culinary delights are lots of unique shops, galleries and antique dealers, a good way to build up an appetite for lunch.

The neighbouring town of Pickering (18 miles) is similar in many ways and plays host to its own delightful set of shops, cafes and restaurants. A few miles further on takes you to Thornton-le-Dale (20 miles), a very pretty North York Moors village with thatched houses and a sleepy little brook. Stop for some ice cream here and remind yourself how nice life in the slow lane feels.

Excellent location for hardy walkers, lovely cottage comfortably coping with four adults. Country pub, just 50 yards away, and serving very good food.

We really enjoyed this cottage - well equipped, and modern decor. Local access to good walking & mountain biking. It didnt bother us, but if you are looking to tour the area, the cottage does involve a 20-30min drive each time you want to get to a main road and access the coast, or local larger times

East Steading is in a wonderful remote-feeling location. The cottage was immaculately clean and well presented although the sitting and dining area was rather snug for four adults. A long awaited Village Hall is being constructed opposite the cottage. There is first rate walking on the doorstep, stuRead morenning moorland views from Blakey Ridge above and elsewhere and lovely tea rooms and restaurants close by in Helmsley and Pickering.

We loved the cottage but do have a couple of small comments. 1. It would be nice to have details of the nearest vet in the cottage info. Just for peace of mind in case of emergency 2. It would be good to include a vegetable peeler in the kitchen utensils. 3. Would be handy to mention the available Read morerecycling in the cottage guide.

The property was delightful, clean, well equipped and maintained, warm and comfortable. It's located in a small hamlet in a valley below Blackey Ridge which is quiet with wonderful views and walking. Top tip: go prepared if self catering because the welcome pack is sparse (they warn it can't be guaranteed) and there are no shops within "popping out" distance. Hide
