The location of this property is fantastic. Perched on the hillside of the beautiful Esk Valley in the village of Sleights, you can hop on a steam train at Grosmont (3 miles) or feel the sand between your toes on Whitby's beach (4.5 miles).

Sleights itself is a peaceful little village with a scattering of shops and places to eat. Just along the road from the cottage you'll find a traditional and welcoming pub with cask ales, hearty local food and a log fire to keep you warm and toasty in the colder months. If you decide to eat in, you can pick up some local produce from the butcher and deli in the village. If you are enjoying this luxury cottage near Whitby with kids, there is also a lovely children's park a short walk away.

You’re less than 5 miles from the stunning North Yorkshire coastline, made up of a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, this is proper bucket 'n spade territory. The coast's villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tea rooms sitting alongside upmarket champagne and oyster bars.

Although you could happily spend the weekend mooching about the independent shops, bars and cafes along Whitby's bustling medieval streets, it's worth striking out to sample some of the other coastal villages nearby. Robin Hood's Bay (8 miles) is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire and this village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend (5 miles), Staithes (12 miles) and Runswick Bay (11 miles) are all within easy driving distance, each with their own unique charm.

Head west from the cottage and you can be in the heart of the North York Moors within a few miles. Take a tour of the pretty towns and villages in the area, Egton (5.5 miles), Danby (14 miles), Castleton (15 miles), Rosedale (14 miles). Otherwise, you could head up to the high moorland of Castleton Rigg (15 miles), on a clear day it will take your breath away. Suffice to say this area is a walker's paradise.

A great place to stay - everything we needed to spend time and cook in the cottage after a day exploring beautiful Whitby and Sandsend and walking in the stunning countryside. We missed direct access to a garden for our dog but the grass verges to the front of the house proved sufficient!

Although Eweland House is part of a larger structure that holds other self catering cottages, we felt remarkably on our own. Everything was done perfectly. The Eweland House is impeccable and the management go above and beyond to please! All appliances were in perfect working order; there was a bathroom and shower on each of three floors; the kiRead moretchen was modern and well designed. The girt basket was a special treat and introduction to local goods. The location was perfect for a quiet retreat after a day of exploring the region. Hide
