Take a look at this idyllic two-bedroom (both en-suite) country cottage set just 4.5 miles outside the handsome cathedral city of Ripon. With cosmopolitan Harrogate just 15 miles away, this holiday home is the perfect choice for an elegant town and country escape.

Entrance to the cottage is via a pretty courtyard, complete with a fig tree which gives the cottage its name. Step inside the French doors and into a beautiful open-plan living area that includes the lounge, kitchen and dining table. Solid floorboards underfoot and original artwork by the owner gives the room warmth and character.

The lounge area is home to a comfy seating, perfect for curling up on by the fire. The wood burner keeps everything nice and toasty, providing a warm background glow as you settle down for the evening. For your entertainment, you'll find a TV, DVD player, radio and docking station along with Wi-Fi for if you want to catch up online.

Time for lunch. Let's rustle something up in the gorgeous kitchen with its pastel blue tones and rustic farmhouse furniture. All mod cons are provided including an induction hob, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge with ice-box. Coffee fans will enjoy the coffee machine and in the summer months you can enjoy your morning cuppa outside in the courtyard. At the heart of the kitchen is a chunky dining table bathed in sunlight from the French doors, a lovely spot to dine whatever the time of day.

Both bedrooms in this beautiful Yorkshire cottage are upstairs. The stunning master bedroom has a dramatic French king-size bed and features a beautiful en-suite bathroom. There's a bath to sink into each evening and a shower overhead for mornings when you'll be wasting no time in getting out and about. The second bedroom is a twin room which also enjoys an en-suite shower room.

Outside, you'll find a charming courtyard garden complete with a patio and garden furniture. There is also secure storage for bicycles. Lunch alfresco here in the warmer months is a delight and a gas BBQ is provided for those balmy summer evenings. Pour yourself a glass of fizz and settle down, with only the sound of birdsong for company as you enjoy your sundowner in the Yorkshire countryside.

This cottage is in a lovely rural location yet just 4.5 miles from the vibrant cathedral city of Ripon and 14 miles from Harrogate. It offers the peace and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales countryside with the delights of cosmopolitan towns just a few miles away.

Close by there's the charming little town of Boroughbridge (4 miles). Set on the banks of the River Ure, this handsome town was first settled in Roman times and today offers some good options for eats as well as lovely walks along the river.

Nearby Aldborough (5 miles) runs a fantastic festival every June/July with opera, piano and string quartets, a delight if you enjoy classical music. This village is also home to two spectacularly well-preserved Roman footpaths.

This area of Yorkshire has enough historical sites to keep you busy for a week with Ripley Castle (11 miles), Newby Hall (4 miles) and Norton Conyers (7 miles). The world-famous Fountains Abbey (8 miles) and the adjoining Studley Royal Water Garden (9 miles) are both within easy striking distance. As well as the spectacular ruins of a 12th century Cistercian Abbey, the grounds of Studley Royal Water Garden are home to an Elizabethan Mansion, a medieval deer park and some of the most romantic vistas in the country.

There's also Ripon Cathedral just 5 miles from this property. Despite being smaller than its close neighbour, York Minster (21 miles), Ripon Cathedral is an awe-inspiring site. In addition, every night for at least 450 years, the Ripon Hornblower has sounded the curfew at 9.00pm from all four sides of the obelisk in the market place, come rain or shine.

Harrogate (14 miles) is an absolute must if you're staying here. Encircled by its famous Stray or 1,000 acres of horseshoe-shaped grassland, the Victorian spa town of Harrogate has a bright and breezy open-air feel and is characterised by its impressive floral displays. As you would expect of such a bustling upbeat town, Harrogate boasts over 300 bars and restaurants together with all the shops, swimming pools, cinemas, parks and gardens you could ever wish for.

And with York and the Yorkshire Dales both less than 25 miles away, there are lots of options for day trips!

This is our second stay at Fig Tree Cottage and as before we really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is very well equipped with very comfortable beds. The surrounding area is well provided with places worth visiting within easy reach and the village has got a rather nice walk down a country lane. Highly recommended.

Lovely cottage, in an ideal spot to explore the Yorkshire Dales. We stayed with our 2 teenage girls and 2 greyhounds, and they all enjoyed the cottage. The cottage was very clean and very well appointed. We were fortunate to stay during the hot weather, and the owners provided fans to ensure our stay was comfortable during the heatwave.

Beautiful cottage, extremely comfortable a real home from home. It was delightful sitting in the garden listening to the birds singing in the late afternoon/evening sunshine. Wendy was extremely warm and welcoming and was on hand to ensure the garden was Toby-proof when our inquisitive terrier/Jack Russell cross decided to go and visit the sheep inRead more their field. We would love to visit Fig Tree Cottage again and further explore the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside. Hide

We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage - it was well equipped and very peaceful. Greeted by two lambs when we arrived which made us smile. We are seasoned visitors to North Yorkshire and we weren't disappointed.

The cottage is very warm and cosy and is in an ideal location for visiting friends off the A1. The village is ideal for a walk around and the patio and garden at the cottage were perfect for us and our dog. Wendy and Peter were very helpful hosts if/when needed. Ripon and Boroughbridge are close by. We would return if we are this way again.
