Sitting on the edge of Gillamoor, an attractive North York Moors village, it’s 2 miles south to the pretty town of Kirbymoorside and then you can travel onto vibrant and attractive Yorkshire market towns like Pickering (10 miles) and Helmsley (8 miles); both of which have an abundance of good restaurants, tea-rooms and independent shops.

Beyond the village lies the North York Moors. A landscape like no other, it's a place of gentle rolling hills of heather, ancient woodlands and lazy rivers winding through lush green valleys. If you want to get away from it all take a trip to the top of the high central moorlands. The famous Blakey Ridge affords some breathtaking views and is just 8 miles drive from the cottage. If walking is your thing, you are surrounded on all sides by some truly stunning routes.

This holiday home is close to the North Yorkshire Coast, with the gothic town of Whitby (24 miles) and the picture-postcard fisherman village of Robin Hood's Bay (28 miles) a drive away. Take a day trip here and experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Yorkshire's coastline.

We spent a fantastic few days at Gales Lodge, over New Year. The lodge was absolutely beautiful, and felt much more spacious than the images give credit for! The wood burner was gorgeous! The welcome pack was lovely...the most delicious ginger biscuits ever tasted! So many pretty villages with good pub food too! Highly recommended! Hide

Booking Gales Lodge was a last minute thing, after our initial plans had to be shelved, but I can say, hand on heart, that this was no compromise. The cottage was spotlessly clean, well appointed and very well equipped. It was the little things, and the attention to detail that made it such a great place to be. The welcome basket had everything youRead more could want, and even though walking to places was not really recommended, due to there being no footpaths near the cottage, it was no hardship to jump in the car and drive. Our hosts were friendly, and nothing was any trouble. I would recommend Gales Lodge without hesitation, and will be booking again in the future. Thank you! Hide

These cottages are a great central base from where to day trip from. Well presented, quiet and recommended. Pub a five minute walk away, town 2 miles away, and a very good short walk to Hutton-le-Hole. Helmsley, Pickering (steam train to Whitby) and Castle Howard are all close and the coast not to far a drive.
