Set in rolling countryside on the edge of the owners' working farm, this beautiful cottage provides the ideal base for families and couples to explore this historic part of West Yorkshire

Explore your Yorkshire surroundings or simply sit back and relax when you escape to this beautiful stone cottage at Lightcliffe, just 3 miles from Halifax. The backdrop to the TV series Gentleman Jack, this scenic area offers myriad footpaths and trails to follow by bicycle or on foot. Set on the owners’ farm, the pretty, two-bedroom property sleeps four guests and is approximately 12 miles from the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Plan day trips down to this magnificent area, where you will find many more places to hike and cycle. Visit Folly Dolly Falls, a magical, hidden waterfall near Meltham, 12 miles away, on the fringes of the national park. Also take time out to explore Holmfirth, 13 miles from the cottage, and the site of many scenes from TV comedy Last of the Summer Wine.

Stroll into the bright and beautifully decorated Yorkshire cottage, which still presents hints of its past in its gorgeous beams. Find yourselves in an open-plan kitchen/diner, with generous space for preparing delicious, holiday feasts. Pause at the table in here with a cup of tea and a slice of Yorkshire parkin while supper sizzles in the oven. Lay the table and call your friends and family to join you as soon as your meal is ready. You have a handy washing machine and tumble dryer for muddy clothes after your exhilarating walks and there is also a downstairs WC.

Head through to the lounge after dinner to unwind in comfort. Sink into the soft sofas with your holiday novel for a while; find something to watch on the Smart TV/DVD, which comes with a basic Sky TV package. Open the French windows onto the terrace in here on warm, sunny days.

When the exertions of your day finally catch up with you, climb the stairs to the first floor of the cottage. Settle for the night in either the king-size bedroom, with its vaulted ceiling, or the bunk bedroom. Find the family bathroom here too. Make the most of your private, enclosed courtyard garden as often as possible, and cook supper out on the BBQ on warm evenings. You’ll find parking for up to two cars at the cottage.

The National Trust’s Marsden Moor, 16 miles from your base, is a lovely place to visit. This is a large expanse of moorland within the South Pennines. Closer to home, venture to Ogden Water Country Park, just 7 miles away. This nature reserve is renowned for its incredible lakeside views, scenic landscape and collection of footpaths and trails.

Make an 18-mile trip north to Ilkley, with its famous moor right at the southern tip of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Head on to Bolton Abbey, 25 miles from the cottage, to see the priory ruins and wander the spell-binding grounds, with their woods, river, waterfall and aqueduct.

Lightcliffe is just 3 miles from Halifax, the thriving market town that was once the centre of the wool trade in Victorian England, and which blessed the town with wealth and good fortune. Many of the opulent buildings and monuments from this time can still be seen as you walk around the town, including Piece Hall, a magnificent Georgian building, which was once the place where weavers sold their cloth. Nowadays, it’s a fabulous place to grab a tasty bite to eat or peruse the independent shops and boutiques, as well as catch some outdoor performances.

Other impressive buildings include Halifax Minster, the town’s gothic church; the Grade II-listed Halifax Town Hall, created by the same man who designed the Houses of Parliament; and Shibden Hall, a 15th-century historic home surrounded by a glorious park, once home to famous lesbian diarist Anne Lister, who wrote her secret diaries there. The parkland is an excellent place to spend a day, where you can walk beside the pretty flowerbeds, row across the Mere or ride on the miniature train which will delight any children in your party. Kids will also love Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, which is sure to capture their imaginations with its 400 interactive exhibits.

If you enjoy food, make sure to visit Halifax’s Borough Market, which is a stunning Grade II-listed building hosting an award-winning covered market throughout the week. Sample some local produce and pick up a tasty treat to enjoy back at your luxury holiday cottage.

Warm, comfortable and spacious accommodation. Good off road parking. Quiet but within reach of shops and pubs. We found The Sun Inn very welcoming with good food and just 5mins walk from the cottage. We visited Shibden Hall and the Piece Hall in Halifax and even did a few local walks in spite of the wet weather.

A top-notch cottage! A thoughtful basket of treats and milk on arrival. The cottage is immaculately clean, well-equipped and very comfortable - A special mention must be made of the incredibly comfy bed!
