Stay in this characterful cottage, which is the former childhood home of Captain Cook! With picturesque views and plenty of walks from the doorstep. Perfect for family and friends seeking adventure in and around the North Yorkshire Moors.

Lose yourselves in the glorious views out across the Cleveland Hills when you stay at this appealing holiday home with its unique history. Once home to famous British explorer Captain James Cook, it now offers impressive accommodation and a picturesque outlook. Set in the Yorkshire village of Great Ayton, the three-bedroom cottage sleeps six guests and welcomes up to three of their four-legged friends. Located close to the fringes of the North York Moors National Park, it is in a great location for hiking, climbing and horse riding, as well as cycling.

Make the most of your historical setting by visiting the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum in the village or embarking upon a 2.5-mile walk to the Captain Cook Monument. Undertake a 5.5-mile hike from the cottage to the Warren Moor ironstone mine, a great example of engineering ingenuity where you can see an old chimney believed to be the only Victorian ironstone mining chimney remaining in the country.

Open the front door of this period property and enter via the lobby. Find yourselves in the dining room, where you will all be able to gather for delicious holiday dinners and hearty Yorkshire breakfasts to set you up for the day. Wander on through into the lounge to bask in the streaming sunshine and perhaps fire up the wood burner on autumn and winter nights. Relax in here after your fun-filled days out, chat about your plans for the rest of your stay and choose something to watch together on the Smart TV.

Make your way into the beautiful kitchen, with its combination of exposed stonework and stylish fittings, to make everyone a cup of tea. Decide what to prepare for dinner with the fresh Yorkshire produce you have shopped for on your trips out. Pause at the table with a glass of something cold and your magazine or book while supper roasts in the oven.

End each day by heading off to either the convenient, double bedroom on the ground floor, which has an en-suite wet room and WC, or the king-size or twin room up on the first floor. The family bathroom is also up at this level.

Take breakfast out on the terrace on sunny days and watch the children and dogs play on the grass. Keep an eye on them near the pond, which is home to ducks and geese. Light the BBQ on warm evenings to have dinner out in the fresh air and take in the beautiful views. You’ll find plenty of parking at the property too.

  • 3 bedrooms - 1 double (downstairs), 1 king-size and 1 twin room

Venture over to the coast during your stay in North Yorkshire. Drive to Marske Sands Beach, 10 miles away, to walk beside the sea and paddle in the shallows. Stroll from here along a circular, 4-mile route through Redcar to enjoy the coastal vistas. Drive 27 miles to Whitby for the day, to swim and play on the beach and to discover more about its smuggling past and its literary connections to the gothic horror tale of Dracula.

The attractive village of Great Ayton has a wonderful village vibe. With a selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes and tearooms, you could eat out every night if you wanted to. If you love to walk, from Great Ayton you can walk up to Roseberry Topping (2 miles); a prominent hill with lots of walking trails that lead up to the distinctive summit and cliffs.

The vibrant little village of Osmotherley (15 miles) is well-known as a starting point for walkers and cyclists. This gorgeous little place is real picture-postcard stuff. It also offers excellent facilities including a cafe, village stores and a fish and chip shop. If you’re a bit of a foodie, this part of Yorkshire is packed with fantastic gastropubs, restaurants and delis.

Situated within the western reaches of the North York Moors, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987, Osmotherley has close proximity to lush pastures and woodlands. The western moors play host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market town and the views from here are simply stunning, and there are walks and cycle routes in every direction. You are very close to the famous Cleveland Way as well as many more well-known and picturesque moorland walks, some of which lead all the way to the sea.

Great Ayton’s position at the northern end of the North York Moors means the coast is easily accessible from here. To breathe in the fresh, sea air, head to the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea (11 miles) with its pier, cliff tramway, golden sand and clean surf.

Delightful cottage in a beautiful location. Surrounded by stunning walks. A great location to base yourself in, walking distance (1.2 miles) into Great Ayton, a little on narrow roads. Thoroughly recommended, and the owners are lovely.

One of the best dog friendly cottages we have been to. It is on a working farm, up a hill, so a little muddy after all the rain, but with lovely views and a good enclosed space for the dogs out the back. Perfect for walkers.
