It's just the place for a couple looking to explore the stunning countryside, with all the benefits of village amenities on your doorstep.

Dating back to 1791, this historic barn has been transformed into a handsome and comfortable holiday home. It's the perfect mix of old and new, with exposed original beams overhead and underfloor heating underfoot (downstairs and up). This is period living with all the contemporary comforts.

Step inside the barn to discover a dramatic double-height open-plan living space. This stunning room is dominated by a striking arched window which reaches almost to the ceiling. A cosy wood burner and warm oak floorboards underfoot keep everything warm and toasty. Arrive to a generous welcome hamper of freshly baked bread and homemade biscuits among other treats.

The living area offers the choice of two comfy sofas to snuggle up on. Light the fire and settle down for the night with a glass of wine or two. For your evening entertainment, there's a TV with Amazon Fire and Alexa remote. Netflix is also provided so you can catch up on your favourite movies and box sets. Wi-Fi is another addition and there are board games and books to enjoy. Walking guides are available too so you can plan your routes for the week ahead.

Next to the living area within the open-plan space is the start of the kitchen. A long unit here boasts elegant cupboards painted in Farrow and Ball, a sleek granite worktop and a Belfast sink. Coffee lovers will enjoy discovering the coffee machine. This area is perfect for preparing food whilst your loved one keeps you company. Pick up some local produce from the friendly butcher next door, perhaps one of his renowned pies, and rustle up a hearty Yorkshire lunch. The owner will provide you with a complimentary voucher so you can choose what you fancy.

The rest of the kitchen is just behind and offers all the usual mod cons including an induction hob, oven, dishwasher, a fridge with a small freezer compartment, microwave and washing machine. There's also an additional sink in here.

The dining table sits by the large arched window and is bathed in light throughout the day. Take your time and enjoy a long leisurely breakfast here whilst mulling over the morning papers. Holidays are made for this! Downstairs is also home to a wet room with a large walk-in shower. This generous room has floor-to-ceiling tiles and a clean, contemporary look.

The bedroom is upstairs, set in a mezzanine-style floor. This inviting and peaceful space has a double bed and cosy landing area. There's also a handy en-suite WC up here.

Outside to the rear of the barn, guests have access to a small area of an enclosed courtyard, a sheltered space perfect for a spot of al fresco lunch. A patio table and chairs are provided. This courtyard is shared with the owner's property which sits at the rear of the barn. For those of you who enjoy cycling, secure lockable storage is available.

The barn has a beautiful location right in the heart of Kirkby Malzeard, one of the Yorkshire Dales' prettiest villages with its stone cottages and handsome church. There's a village pub under a 5-minute stroll away, as well as a village store, butchers, fish and chip shop and antique store.

The village is set in the rolling green countryside of Nidderdale, close to the ancient city of Ripon (6.5 miles). It's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offering the peace and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales countryside with the delights of cosmopolitan Harrogate 15 miles away. With scenic walks and mountain bike trails literally from the doorstep, the cottage is a haven for lovers of the outdoors. Nearby Ripon offers a Thursday market, cathedral, numerous coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and a collection of independent shops to explore.

This area of Yorkshire has enough historical sites to keep you busy for a week, with Ripley Castle, Newby Hall and Norton Conyers, all under 11 miles away. The World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and the adjoining Studley Royal Water Garden are under 6 miles away, deservedly one of the National Trust's most visited locations. As well as the spectacular ruins of a 12th century Cistercian abbey, the grounds are home to an Elizabethan mansion, a medieval deer park and some of the most romantic vistas in the country.

There's also Ripon Cathedral. Smaller than its close neighbour, York Minster, it is still an awe-inspiring site. In addition, every night for at least 450 years, the Ripon Hornblower has sounded the curfew at 9.00pm from all for sides of the obelisk in the market place, come rain or shine, followed by a 15-minute history of the ceremony and the city not to be missed.

If you are partial to a flutter, Ripon Race Ground (7.5 miles) has around 15 meets from April to early September. Known as 'Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse', it has a distinct atmosphere harking back to a bygone era - traditional tearooms and bandstands sit alongside the champagne bar.

Harrogate (15 miles) is an absolute must if you're staying here. Encircled by its famous 'Stray' or '200 acres' of horseshoe-shaped grassland, this Victorian spa town is characterised by its impressive floral displays. And as you would expect of such a bustling upbeat town, Harrogate boasts over 300 bars and restaurants, together with all the shops, cinemas, parks and gardens you could ever wish for.

Head 8.5 miles in the opposite direction, and you will find Pateley Bridge, a quaint market town very typical of this area of Yorkshire. The Main Street is peppered with cafes, restaurants, local stores and a quality butchers, everything you need to stock up for your stay. You'll also find the self-proclaimed 'Oldest Sweet Shop in England' here dating back to the early 1800s.

The equally charming town of Masham is 5 miles away and offers a host of attractions including two breweries (each with their own bars), quality restaurants and a spa at Swinton Park. There are bags of local attractions and stunning natural sights within easy driving distance including the much-loved Brimham Rocks, 9 miles from the cottage.

This cleverly converted, tastefully decorated & extremely well equipped stone barn in a good North Yorkshire location makes for an excellent self-catering base. The property is in the grounds of, & quite close to, the owner's house, within the village - which has a good butcher, small general store, fish & chip shop (good) & a pub (we didn't try itRead more). Walking in the local area is excellent, although the weather wasn't very kind to us & walking boots had to be exchanged for wellies ! Hide
