Tawny Owl Cottage is set in Carlton in Cleveland within the stunning North York Moors National Park. Carlton is a real picture postcard village, were handsome Yorkshire cottages sit either side of a babbling beck running through the village. There’s also a lovely gastro pub here, well known in these parts for serving the very best Thai food and traditional English dishes.

Beyond this gorgeous village are the moors themselves. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987, the lush pastures and woodlands of the western Moors play host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market towns.

There are some stunning walks right from your doorstep, and you are just a mile away from the famous Cleveland Way. Head up Carlton Bank and take in some of the best views in the country, making sure you pop into Lordstone’s Café at the top for a cup of tea and a slice of home-made cake. There’s also a great farm shop here selling the very best local Yorkshire produce.

Just a few miles away you have the beautiful little village of Swainby. Like Carlton in many ways it hosts a further two good dining pubs, a Post Office and local shop.

The beautiful market town of Helmsley is also within easy driving distance and is well worth a visit. If you fancy a little pampering you’ll find the Verbena Spa here; perfect for a little me time indulgence!

And just a little further to the west you will find the charming market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk. Make sure you stop for a cup of tea at Bettys Tearooms!

And with York, Harrogate, the Yorkshire Coast and Leeds all within an hour’s drive, there’s a huge amount of choice for day trips!

With a varied landscape of windswept dales, heather-clad moors and dramatic coast, interspersed with picturesque towns and villages, vibrant cities and a rich historical heritage, Yorkshire is rightly considered one of Britain's premier holiday destinations. Known as 'God's Own County', Yorkshire has nearly one-third of England's National Parkland, two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and three sections of coastline designated as Heritage Coast.

Offering infinite opportunities for lovers of the great outdoors, the wild expanse of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in North and West Yorkshire is a glorious mix of awe-inspiring scenery, imposing castles, characterful Dales' villages and drystone walls. While to the east, the North York Moors National Park offers atmospheric moorland, fragrant pine forests and charming towns tucked away within steep-sloped valleys. Extending all the way to the Yorkshire Coast, you can even experience a traditional day at the seaside at popular resorts including Whitby, Flamborough and Scarborough. It's a beautiful terrain to explore.

A visit to the historical city of York is a must.
