Gilling West is tucked in a splendid rural setting just 3.5 miles from Richmond, a charming market town on the borders of Wensleydale and Swaledale. Richmond boasts an 11th-century castle, fine Georgian architecture, a historic Georgian theatre and a large cobbled market square as some of its many attractions. Stroll into town for a cup of Yorkshire tea at one of the many tea rooms there or pop over for dinner at one of the excellent restaurants.

The River Swale runs through the town and just across the river, less than a mile away are the River Swale waterfalls. You can walk in either direction along the river and deep into the countryside without having to go anywhere near the car. We also recommend exploring the restored former Richmond Railway Station which has lots to entertain young and old including a small cinema, cafe/restaurant, gallery, microbrewery and artisan bakery.

Richmond is also known as The Gateway to the Dales so expect stunning Dales scenery within minutes of leaving the town. The historic village of Easby, home to Easby Abbey is just 4.5 miles away. Set on the banks of the River Swale, the Abbey is the perfect spot for a picnic in the summer months. There are lots of other breathtaking historical sites to explore in the Dales, including the stunning Aysgarth Falls (18.5 miles), which were featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

This is a superb area for walkers and cyclists with many routes from the doorstep or just a short distance away including Alfred Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast Walk which passes close by.

Barnard Castle (12.5 miles) is a historic market town recently listed as one of the ‘top 10 rural places to live in the UK’.

These cottages are part of a wedding venue advertised separately. Thus giving the wrong impression. Adjoining cottages full of wedding revelers who do not care how they behave. Constant noise untill the early hours. Fireworks set off during the night during a heat wave. Surprised nothing was burt down. Left one day early. Would not return.

Would not recommend to stay here if you wish to have a peaceful holiday. This site is holiday home/event venue. For 5 evenings of our 7 night stay, we were up til early hours due to loud guests around the complex and in other accommodations. Asked owner if they could talk to guests but no avail as it was stated by owner the light evenings cause peoRead moreple to stay up and they are due to check out soon, false! Pretty site but noise was a complete let down, will not be returning. Not worth the money. Hide

Had a fantastic break, loved the outlook from, yet seclusion of the balcony. Plenty to do and see nearby, or just chill on the balcony or in the hot tub, in beautiful surroundings. Would love to come again!
