The location of this cottages is fantastic. Perched on the hillside of the beautiful Esk Valley in the village of Sleights, you can be hopping on a steam train at Grosmont (3 miles) or feeling the sand between your toes on Whitby's beach (5 miles) not long after arriving.

Sleights itself is a peaceful little village with a scattering of shops and places to eat. Under half a mile from the cottage, you'll find a traditional and welcoming village pub with cask ales, hearty local food and a log fire to keep you warm and toasty in the colder months. And if you decide to eat in, you can pick up some excellent local produce from the bespoke butcher and deli. If you are enjoying this luxury cottage with children there is also a lovely children's park in the village.

5 miles east from the cottage takes you to the stunning North Yorkshire coastline, a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, this is proper bucket 'n spade territory. That's not to say it's stuck in the past, in fact, the coast's villages and towns combine the traditional and the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tea rooms sitting alongside upmarket champagne and oyster bars.

Although you could happily spend the weekend mooching about the independent shops, bars and cafes along Whitby's bustling medieval streets, it's well worth striking out to sample some of the other coastal villages nearby. Robin Hood's Bay (8 miles) is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend (5 miles), Staithes (17 miles) and Runswick Bay (12 miles) are also all within easy driving distance, each with their own unique charm.

Head west from the cottage and you can be in the heart of the North York Moors within a couple of miles. Take a tour of the impossibly pretty towns and villages in the area or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg (15 miles) - we guarantee on a clear day it will take your breath away. Suffice to say this area is a walker's paradise and many suggested routes are provided for you in the cottage.

The Piggery is a lovely quirky cottage with a fabulous view- to be enjoyed all weathers. I dont think we sat in the lounge at all, we loved the kitchen with great views and cosy fire. Three bedrooms all en suite was a bonus for three friends staying. We met the owner on the last day, he was really nice.

The Piggery is a comfortable and characterful place, with superb views over the valley and hills. Well kitted out, it's almost perfect. Only slight negative is limited parking space: a third car may need parking on the street.

We had a great time at the Piggery last week. Lovely views from the back windows. All mod cons provided within a characterful surround, great interior design style and hospitality elements. Bedrooms very comfortable if a little small, lots of quality showers, but missed a bath! We liked it enough to book again next summer!!

Visited The Piggery 3.09.18 to 7.09.18.The cottage is in a brilliant location and was extremely well equipped with lots of attention to detail that went beyond what one usually finds. The newly baked bread, toiletries and welcome hamper were examples. The whole of the cottage was very clean and thoRead moreughtfully furnished throughout. The integrated downstairs arrangement of kitchen/diner and lounge works well to provide one large living space while also providing discrete areas for different activities. The utility room/downstairs cloakroom with its separate washer and drier was also particularly useful. The two upstairs bedrooms were very disappointing. While accepting that this is a traditional cottage property the rooms were very small. The decision to include king size beds exacerbated this and in one room left only about 12 inches either side of the bed. The hanging space in both rooms was confined and limited and the position of the chests of drawers made them virtually impossible to use. The en-suite shower rooms while obviously very welcomed and well equipped were similarly very small. The shower cubicles have restricted openings which might prove difficult for a larger person as could use of the loos which are not well positioned. The smart TVs in both rooms were a welcomed facility. We chose this property mainly because of the downstairs bedroom with its en-suite wet-room. One of our party was elderly with mobility problems. The information provided suggested that this accommodation would be well-suited. Unfortunately this bedroom has a step down into the en-suite that made it very challenging particularly at night. Likewise there are two quite steep steps down between the lounge and dining area. There is a hand rail but much assistance was needed to transport our elderly relative from one area to the other. It would also have been impossible to even consider taking her outside onto the rear patio where there are even steeper steps. Again the combination of a step and very uneven paths at the front only allowed walking with much assistance. The property is very well presented and the owners are to be commended on what they have achieved but in fairness to future guests the points that I have mentioned above should be made clear in any advertising material.

Response from Gorgeous Cottages:

Hi David, Thank you for taking the time to complete a review, it is appreciated. I agree the cottage is located in a brilliant location and is very well equipped with everything a Gorgeous Guest would need and more! I am sorry to hear you were disappointed with the upstairs bedrooms. We have had very few adverse comments and prior to the owner refurbishing the cottage, they did carry out market research which indicated that guests do prefer to have the en-suite facilities and a larger bed. Due to the design and style of the cottage the bedrooms have been designed to maximise the space available. We do advertise that the cottage is suitable for people with reduced mobility however, we do appreciate that dependent upon a guest's level of mobility, this property may not be suitable due to its quirky nature. The owner has thanked you for your constructive feedback and she will be taking a look later this month on how she can make changes to the cottages in order to improve their accessibility. I do hope we can book you into another Gorgeous Cottage sometime in the future. Take careLouise Hide
