This old blacksmiths cottage offers space and tranquillity in the peaceful rural village of Saxton offering a cosy home from home and plenty of countryside walks.

Escape to beautiful North Yorkshire and embrace a slower pace of life in the countryside, navigating the wild and rugged landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors. Dating back to the 11th-century, this cottage is one of the oldest in Saxton and sleeps six guests in comfort. Reimagined to suit modern-day conveniences whilst maintaining many hints of history and heritage, the property is characterised by stooped ceilings, low-slung doorways and timber beams.

This homely property is a delight after a long journey, especially when you spy the welcome pack with its array of goodies and essentials. Kick off your boots, find a comfortable spot and settle down with a brew and a homemade treat in the kitchen. Simple yet spacious with a breakfast table and all you need for rustling up hearty suppers, this room will act as the hub of the home.

Lulled by the glow of a crackling wood burner in the stone fireplace, it won’t take much convincing to take a seat in the lounge. Next door, the snug has a similar comforting feel, complete with a second wood burner and a selection of board games for evening fun. Take a step back in time and take advantage of the vintage vinyl record player to play some music.

The bathroom is perfectly tailored to your needs on the ground floor, whether you fancy soothing your tired limbs in a hot bath or you would prefer an invigorating shower. Climb the stairs to find three lovely bedrooms on the first floor. In keeping with the timeless charm of the cottage, the ceilings are slightly slanted and there are low windows with pretty views of the neighbouring properties and countryside beyond. There is a delightful double room perfect for privacy, and for young families, the whimsical twin bedroom is accessed via the simple king-size bedroom.

Outside, the garden has a lawn and potential for al fresco meals thanks to the bistro-style table and chairs on the patio. Pluck seasonal produce from the orchard trees and whip up a special summer pudding, or simply bask in the sunshine while the children play. Completing the property is a ground-floor utility room with a washing machine, and off-road parking is available for three cars.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

  • 3 bedrooms - 1 double, 1 king-size and 1 twin (accessed from the king-size)
  • 1 bathroom with shower over bath and WC
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge/freezer
  • Utility area with washing machine
  • Welcome pack provided
  • 2 wood burners - first basket of logs provided
  • TV in the snug
  • Large garden and patio with seating
  • Off-street parking for 3 cars
  • Shop 2 miles and pub under 0.25 miles

Studded amongst unspoilt countryside is the enchanting Yorkshire town of Saxton, a sleepy location with a wonderful pub, friendly cricket club and an 11th-century church. Unravel the fascinating history of the local area and venture to Towton 2 miles away, lacing up your boots and following the historical trail. Tread in the footsteps of historical figures and explore the site where the iconic War of the Roses took place, pausing to breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the views.

For the most adventurous of your party, the Yorkshire Dales is well worth the 25-mile journey, especially if you factor in some exciting walks or an adrenaline-fuelled adventure. You’ll find plenty of scenic trails on your doorstep without straying too far including the grand Lotherton’s Edwardian Gardens 2.5 miles. This market town has a plethora of traditional inns and gastropubs to peruse, each one serving a variety of locally brewed delights, many of which are provided by the three historic breweries in Tadcaster itself.

The jewel in North Yorkshires crown, the ancient walled city of York is 14 miles away and has been the norths spiritual capital for 2,000 years, but thats not to say it is stuck in the past; Yorks affluent population and its influx of tourist pounds has helped to create a cultural and commercial oasis. History seeps out of every cobbled street, but the crooked old buildings house a fantastic range of contemporary designer shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

Everywhere in York is easily reachable by foot as this lovely city houses most of its main attractions within the city walls. Middle Ages town planning means it can take quite some time to get your bearings but finding your way around the labyrinth of warped streets is part of the fun. Make sure you take in York Minster, The Shambles, the Railway Museum and Bettys tea room whilst youre there.

We enjoyed a fabulous stay at this cosy cottage. The beds are very comfy and all the facilities you need are there. We made use of the two log burners which was lovely. The garden was perfect for our two lovely whippets and the surrounding area is beautiful with long walks from the front door.

A charcterful, well maintained cottage, very clean upon arrival. The welcome pack was appreciated by all. The garden was a real boon for the dogs to run about and let off steam. Had a really lovely week at Top End Farm. Very comfortable, well equipped & cosy cottage with spacious garden in a peaceful location. The wood burning stoves were lovely when the weather turned chilly & it was nice to have a choice of two seating areas. Will definitely be booking again for next year!

A lovely comfortable cottage with a large garden for dogs to enjoy the only slight downside being the steep staircase, not for the elderly or infirm.
