Family fun at Hazel Brow Farm

We took a jaunt over to Swaledale last weekend to visit a new property in Reeth – Nurse Cherry Cottage.  Which by the way is just gorgeous, but you’ll see for yourself shortly when it’s launched this week.

We were fortunate enough to have had some fantastic weather while we there.  The Dales were positively sparking in the Spring sunshine, and I’ve never seen Swaledale look so stunning.

Swaledale looking stunning in the Spring sunshine

Whilst we were there we popped into Hazel Brow Farm in Low Row.  It’s always been a favourite of our guests at Laykin and The Old School, so we thought we’d check it out for ourselves.

My children were in seventh heaven the entire time we were there, and here’s why…

Why your children will Love Hazel Brow Farm

The guided tour

Hazel Brow Farm - the guided tour

Farmer Steve, the new owner of Hazel Brow, is obviously very passionate about his animals and what they do at Hazel Brow.  He takes the children on a guided tour of the farm, introducing them to all of the animals and their behaviour.  It’s hugely interesting for an adult and the kids were fascinated too.

Cuddle time

Poppy enjoying some cuddles with the Border Collie pups

It’s fair to say my eldest Poppy has an obsession with animals – big and small.  So when she had the opportunity to hold baby chicks, feed the lambs, cuddle puppies, stroke piglets.  Well, you can imagine!  There is something enormously warming about seeing your children connect with nature, and this policy of letting the kids get to touch and hold the animals here really adds to the experience.

Hatching Live

Baby chicks hatching all the time at Hazel Brow Farm

Fantastic idea, well done Farmer Steve!  Your children can toddle along to the hen house, collect and egg, have their name written on it and then log in at home to watch their own baby chick hatch.  Brilliant!

Treasure trail

To add to the fun we followed a treasure trail at the end to find a host of hidden soft toys around the farm.  And once they had been found the kids were offered a prize at the end.  This is the stuff of legends for children.

Although the sun was splitting the trees when we were there, Hazel Brow Farm also offers an indoor play room, so even on rainy days it’s worth a visit.  There’s a wendy house, toys, books, a ball pit, tractors, puzzles, games and dressing up clothes.  Plenty enough to keep little ones, and the big kids, happy for some time.  And downstairs there’s a cosy little café with particularly good scones.

We all loved our time at Hazel Brow Farm, and you will too!
