If you are looking for a dog-friendly holiday cottage in the Howardian Hills, we recommend taking a look at Secret View. It’s in easy reach of Castle Howard and surrounded by lovely countryside and pretty villages. Even better it’s child friendly and you can take two doggies with you!
#01 The beautiful Howardian Hills
The Howardian Hills were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987 and Secret View has a prime position in the heart of this stunning part of Yorkshire. Think tree-lined roads, traditional English parkland, and plenty of open spaces to explore. Secret View itself is in a small hamlet on the brow of a hill between several villages – a prime position to start exploring!
#02 Visit an impressive stately home
The most famous feature of the Howardian Hills is probably the very well-loved stately home Castle Howard. It’s perhaps best known for Brideshead Revisited and the grand rooms will certainly transport you back in time.
The gorgeous (and extensive) grounds include lakes, temples, a walled garden so make sure you allow lots of time to explore. It’s also well worth exploring the nearby Yorkshire Arboretum too.
#03 Explore lovely villages (and smell some Yorkshire Lavender)
You are spoilt for choice of lovely villages surrounding Secret View. The nearest is Terrington (an official state village of Castle Howard) where you’ll find a shop / tearoom where you can easily pass an hour or two with some coffee and cake.
In the other direction you’ll find Sheriff Hutton which has an excellent delicatessen / café called Quarmby’s. You’ll find a range of luxury local products and the welcome hamper at Secret View actually is filled with their products. There’s also a pub, wine shop and even the remains of an ancient castle (once used by Richard III) so well worth a visit.
You can also enjoy some fabulous Yorkshire Lavender at the aptly named Yorkshire Lavender! The family run business is set in 60 acres and is open over a summer season (it’s actually open until October) then over Christmas.
#04 Relax and unwind
I love the cosiness of Secret View. It sleeps up to 3 people so is ideal for either couples or small families and you really can make yourself at home with a selection of books, games and comfy chairs.
I recommend getting a selection of wines and nibbles in Sheriff Hutton, switching the fire on and just relaxing.
Both bedrooms have great views of the surrounding area (well it is called Secret View) and you can enjoy a restful night on crisp white sheets after a day spent exploring Howardian Hills.
#05 Enjoy some walks (with or without your dog)
Secret Garden is a pet-friendly holiday cottage (you can take up to two dogs) ad you’ll find a cupboard in the kitchen with blankets, bowls and even some doggie treats.
You’ll find some great options for walks where you can all stretch your legs and make the most of the fabulous countryside. One option we love is a circular walk around Terrington Village which gives great views!
There’s also a choice of 3 walking paths that are all just 5 minutes from the cottage. Full details of each are including in the welcome pack for Secret View so you can try a different one each day if you fancy.
Secret View is available to book now through Gorgeous Cottages for up to 3 people and 2 dogs. For further information give the Gorgeous Cottages team a call on 01642 263 249.
