David Stead was born in 1960 to a farming family in North Yorkshire.
At the age of 10 he discovered Mozart and Cezanne and from that moment the worm was no longer at risk from from the plough! He studied Fine Art at Harrogate & Wimbledon colleges and has been a professional artist since graduating. For the past fifteen years he has also run his own gallery in Ripon.
David’s work tends to be project based which gives it a narrative quality; like a visual diary. Currently he is working on the ‘River Ure Project’ – an artist’s response in words and pictures to the river Ure and the landscape that surrounds it.
We’ve showcased just a few of his beautiful paintings of Yorkshire below. You can view more online on his www.davidsteadgallery.co.uk

‘Early Spring River’
“The River Ure Project is ongoing and I am charting the course of the river from its source, through Wensleydale and the Plain of York to the sea; painting, drawing and writing about its seasonal changes, the environmental issues that affect the river, its wildlife and its ever changing habitats.”
‘Black Sheep Crosses Masham’
David’s drawings, paintings and writings have been featured in several magazines and literary websites and the River Ure Project is currently being serialised in ‘Dalesman’ magazine.
