If you are thinking of letting out your holiday cottage then there’s lots of things to think about. From getting the layout right to planning your furnishings, there’s plenty of things you can do to make your luxury Yorkshire holiday cottage stand out from the crowd.
One thing though which many holiday owners overlook is the importance of your welcome hamper. This will often be one of the first things your guests will notice and can really set the tone for their short break or holiday.
Guests will often have been looking forward to their holiday for many months and a good welcome hamper can help make the break extra special. We’ve taken a look at what to include in your welcome hamper – from the importance of local produce to including the essentials
Here are some of the things to consider when deciding what to include in your welcome hamper:
#01 Always include the essentials
Although it can be lovely to include some nice biscuits or fudge, make sure you include some essential items as well. Guests may have had a long journey to reach you and may well be shattered by the time they arrive.
Providing bread, butter, milk, cheese and eggs (as well as tea and coffee) means your guests can have a light supper and a cuppa when they arrive.
#02 Think about who will be staying
The contents of a welcome hamper will vary depending on the size and type of your holiday cottage. If you are a family-friendly property, then something for the children is always nice (sweets and an activity book will always go down well) and if you are dog-friendly then don’t forget about four-legged friends. Pooches (and their owners) will love arriving to dog biscuits and a squeaky toy.
A bottle of bubbly is the perfect start to a romantic break (or celebration for that matter) and crisps, crackers and cheese are usually popular with everyone.
#03 Add a personal touch
Everyone likes to feel a little bit special – especially on holiday – so thoughtful personal touches can go a long way. If you do bake cakes (or brownies or pies) then hand-made treats are always a winner and a hand-written welcome note is always nice.
You could write about the provenance of your items and why you have selected them for your welcome pack or even get chocolates personalised with children’s names.
Sometimes in life it is the little things that make all the difference.
#04 Stick with local produce
These days everyone likes to know where food has come from. Provenance is key and local suppliers and seasonal produce have never been more important.
There’s so much Yorkshire produce to include with cheeses, chutneys, cakes and biscuits all in abundance.
Try to include items from the village or town where the cottage is located and work with local farm shops and delicatessens.
Guests will love it and you are helping to support local businesses!
#05 Presentation can go a long way
Give some thought as to how you will present the Welcome Hamper. After all there’s no use sourcing lovely local items or baking a cake then putting it all in a tatty cardboard box. Put any perishables in the fridge but let people know about them in your welcome note.
Leave the welcome hamper in a place that will easily be spotted – such as the kitchen table and choose a nice basket, wooden board or rustic crate to display your items to full effect. Little touches like a local postcard (Gorgeous Cottages can provide owners with a range of local scenes) and fresh flowers will always brighten things up too.
Putting a bit of thought into what to include in your Welcome Hamper will help to set the tone for the guest’s visit to your holiday cottage. Things like this can help you to achieve those 10/10 reviews, encourage repeat bookings and get word of mouth recommendations. It really is well worth the effort!
