Decided to take the family to The Piggery holiday cottage on the Yorkshire Coast this weekend. Set in the pretty village of Sleights just minutes from Whitby and the beautiful North Yorkshire Coastline, it’s also just a few miles from Grosmont and Goathland where you can catch the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway…
We had a lovely weekend and it was a delight to discover how child-friendly the cottage and the location was. There were lots of children’s DVDs provided, a cot and high-chair provided and best of all an excellent children’s park just a few minutes’ walk away. And of course all of the funny little pigs in various shapes and sizes throughout the cottage kept them amused for hours!

Highlights of our stay at The Piggery cottage Sleights
Sitting back and enjoying the view
As soon as myself and my husband walked into the cottage we said in tandem ‘wow!’ You are immediately struck with a quite stunning view of the Esk Valley in the North York Moors, both from the sitting room and from the kitchen. Our first port of call was to sit on the balcony and just drink it in…
Winding down
Owner Geoff had very kindly laid a fire for us and so the cottage was warm and toasty from the moment we arrived. The charming traditional sitting room in The Piggery is one of the cosiest places I’ve been for some time, and we all enjoyed just kicking back and relaxing in here.
The amazing local Deli
We walked down into Sleights and found the fantastic Radfords.. An award winning Butcher / Deli full of wonderful organic and local produce. We stocked up for our Sunday lunch, unable to resist the Radford steak pie and gravy. Well this is Yorkshire!
Good pub grub
On Saturday evening we ventured out to the local village pub in Sleights, The Plough Inn – just a few hundred yards from The Piggery. The food was excellent and the service even better. They were particularly good with our girls even though they were causing mayhem the majority of the time…
The steam train
We caught the steam train at Goathland Station, which you might recognise as Hogwarts Station in the Harry Potter films. This is just picture-postcard stuff. Poppy and Florence had the time of their lives as we chuffed along to Pickering and back with the North York Moors passing by our window. At one point we spotted a field just full of Pheasants – I’ve never seen so many together at one time – which made me think, what is the collective noun for a group of Pheasants – anyone know???
