Welcome to Emerald's Barn, a gorgeous barn conversion set in open countryside just 25 minutes from central York. With its wonderful uninterrupted views, elegant interiors and use of a tennis court on the grounds, it's the perfect choice for couples looking for a sophisticated country escape. And when town calls, stunning medieval York is on your doorstep.
Dating back to the early 19th Century, Emerald's Barn is a Grade II listed building which has been completely refurbished transforming it from a farmyard building into a luxurious and comfortable holiday home. Much of the character of the brick and pantile barn remains with exposed beams overhead giving you a sense of the building's history.
Downstairs you'll find a gorgeous open plan living space, home to the sitting, kitchen and dining area. Oak flooring and Farrow & Ball Old White throughout lend an elegant and peaceful ambience. Floor to ceiling windows and a glazed door provide far reaching views of the wild flower meadow and Howardian Hills beyond.
In the sitting area there's a large L-shaped sofa to snuggle up on and a wood burning stove set within an inglenook fireplace keeps everything cosy. All wood is provided, so enjoy lighting up the fire every evening and settling down by its warm glow. And of course, the barn comes with full central heating.
For your entertainment there's a large wall-mounted TV with SKY and Wi-Fi is also provided. And readers will love the mini library provided along the stairs.
The kitchen boasts cheerful Farrow & Ball Hague blue units with a sleek silestone work-top, an indication of the quality of this refurbishment. There's a dishwasher, fridge with an ice-box, ceramic hob & oven and a microwave. Coffee lovers will appreciate the Nespresso coffee machine. Settle down on your terrace with a cup to enjoy the morning sun.
The farmhouse dining table is just perfect for two. Pick up some excellent local produce from the village shop and rustle up a proper Yorkshire breakfast. Take your time and peruse the morning papers whilst you plan your day. A charming dresser is home to your glassware and crockery.
Make your way upstairs into the eaves of the barn to discover a generous master bedroom. This beautiful room features a super-king sleigh bed dressed in the finest cotton bed linen with plush velvet curtains adding to the sense of luxury. French doors lead out onto a Juliet balcony offering a bird's eye view of the surrounding landscape. It's a joy to throw open the doors and welcome in the sights and sounds of the Yorkshire countryside. The bedroom is also home to an easy chair, chest of drawers and plenty of in-built hanging space.
The bathroom is next door, another generous room with a fabulous free-standing bath. Sink in for a long soak after a busy days sightseeing or hiking in the North York Moors. There's also a walk-in high-pressure shower, perfect for waking you up each morning.
Outside this beautiful barn you'll find a sheltered stone terrace complete with outdoor furniture. Take your breakfast or lunch al fresco with the sun on your face. The field next to the barn has been recently planted as a wild flower meadow and is a riot of colour in late Spring, just the spot to throw down a blanket for a picnic. The grounds also have a tennis court, available to use by arrangement, and a large barn next door which is perfect for storing bikes.
For lovers of wildlife, kestrels, buzzards, skylarks, lapwings, curlews and geese are regular visitors, as are deer, hares and badgers. You'll also meet three very friendly cocker spaniels belonging to the owners of Emerald Barn. Your hosts live in the adjacent farmhouse next door.
Emerald's Barn is tucked away down a long private lane in the picturesque countryside just North of York. It takes around 25 minutes to drive into the city, or you can catch a bus (running every hour) from the local village Stillington, just 2 miles away.
This pretty village has 3 pubs, one of which is an award-winning gastro pub, and a Fish n' Chip shop so lots of choice for eats. There is also a fantastic shop / green grocers / Post Office which is the real heart of the village.
Perfectly positioned to visit the very best of North Yorkshire, the cottage sits on the edge of an area called the Howardian Hills. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987, this land of lush pastures and woodlands plays host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market towns.
Any visit to this area must include a day trip into York. York is a favourite amongst even the most seasoned of travellers. History seeps out of every cobbled street, but the crooked old buildings house a fantastic range of designer shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Make sure you take in York Minster, The Shambles, Railway Museum and Betty's Tea-rooms whilst you're there.
If you're a bit of a foodie you'll be spoilt for choice here. There are several excellent gastro-pubs within easy driving distance including the nationally renowned Durham Ox at Crayke just a few miles away. And if you want to push the boat out, the Michelin starred Black Swan at Oldstead and Star Inn at Harome are within easy reach.
If walking or cycling is your thing there are lots of beautiful walks and routes in the area, some right from the doorstep. And if you fancy some serious hiking the North York Moors landscape offers some of the best walking in the country. Take a trip up to the top of the high moorlands around Blakey Ridge and breathe in that clear Yorkshire air.
The beautiful market town of Helmsley is within easy driving distance and is well worth a visit. If you fancy a little pampering you'll find the Verbena Spa here; perfect for a little me time indulgence! And in the opposite direction you'll find Malton, another gorgeous market town offering lots of lovely independent shops and cafes to indulge in. The charming market town of Easingwold is also a great option and is just five miles from the cottage.
