Richmond is an historic market town. The town and imposing Norman castle are within easy walking distance and the front of the cottage looks directly across to the castle's south curtain wall. In addition to the castle, which has a great view from the top of the Keep or Great Tower, Richmond has a unique Georgian Theatre Royal, as well as twisting, cobbled lanes, small local museums and a fascinating mix of architecture. The central marketplace hosts a small Saturday market where you can find delicious, high quality local produce, including fresh fish from Whitby, fruits, vegetables and delicious cheese. There are numerous independent shops, including a bookshop, deli and pantry, local family butchers, a greengrocer and other shops selling local produce, plus tea rooms and cafes. The nearby converted railway station, opposite the local swimming pool, is home to a number of amenities, including a small, multi-screen cinema, café, micro-brewery, handmade chocolate shop, local ice-cream parlour, artisan bakery and delicatessen. The Station can be easily reached from the town or by footpath from the cottage. The Victorian indoor market hall, close to the castle and Town Hall, is home to the local Tourist Information desk. The landscape of North Yorkshire is steeped in history, with historic houses and ruined abbeys, whilst its natural features change throughout the seasons; from rare wild flower meadows in the spring to glorious purple heather moors in August and snow capped hills in winter. The region is also noted for its fresh local produce, good food and local character. To help you get the most out of your visit, the cottage contains information on various local activities and places of interest.Evergreen Cottage enjoys an elevated position. A hairdryer, ample wardrobe space, iron and ironing board and clothes rack are available. The small family shower room and WC is upstairs, at the end of the landing. It includes a dual headed shower with a good supply of hot water and complimentary toiletries. All the rooms, except the shower room, have a view over to the castle and the main rooms also have a view of the garden.

Swaledale is situated between Wensleydale, to the south, and Teesdale to the north. From Richmond, you can drive up the full length of the dale, in all it’s glorious and natural beauty, into the Pennine Hills. Each dale has its own special characteristics and Swaledale retains its wild, limestone landscape. It is famous for its ancient dry stone walls, wildflower meadows, stone field barns, scattered villages and hardy sheep. The dale hosts a variety of local, cultural and sporting activities, for example: the celebrated Swaledale Festival, which takes place during two weeks in May and June each year, the Muker Silver Band, the annual Reeth agricultural show, and Ard Rock, the UKs number one mountain bike event. There are walks suitable for many levels of fitness and the Dales National Park centre in Reeth provides helpful information. Other highlights include the waterfalls at Keld, picture perfect Ivelet bridge, Tan Hill Inn known as Britain's highest public house, and the village of Reeth with cafes, traditional inns, picnic opportunities and great views from the village green.

Linking Swaledale with neighbouring Wensleydale, the Buttertubs Pass, is an iconic route past 20 metre limestone potholes known as the Buttertubs. Highlights in Wensleydale, in addition to the famous cheese making in Hawes, include the market town of Leyburn, Bolton Castle, Middleham Castle, Hardraw Force waterfall, Aysgarth Falls, the Wensleydale Railway, Penn Hill, The Forbidden Corner, Jervaulx Abbey at East Witton and variety of pretty villages along the way.

In Teesdale, to the north, don’t miss the spectacular High Force, the Bowes Museum and cafe in Barnard Castle and Egglestone Abbey, near the riverside path, as well as attractive villages such as Romaldkirk.

Further afield, for a longer outing, there are many opportunities including to the east, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and the North Yorkshire Moors and railway. To the north, Durham Cathedral, Beamish Open Air museum and Hadrian’s Wall (Vindolanda, Chesters Fort etc.). To the west, the Three Peaks, Settle and the Lake District. To the south lie York, with its impressive Minster, the Shambles and museums, as well as Rievaulx Abbey, Newby Hall, the spa town of Harrogate which is famous for Bettys Café Tea Rooms, stately Castle Howard, glorious Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Brimham Rocks, Harlow Carr Gardens (RHS), the Bronte Parsonage at Howarth, Salts Mill and Saltaire.
