About Ewelands Retreat

Ewelands Retreat is a divine little cottage in the pretty village of Sleights, just minutes from Whitby and the beautiful Yorkshire Coast. With its cosy wood-burning stove, stylish open-plan design and a breath-taking view of the Eskdale Valley from the patio, we think it's the perfect honeymoon hideaway! An idyllic setting for couples looking for a truly romantic holiday cottage on the Yorkshire Coast.

Accessed from the outside by a few steps between paths and set on the lower ground level of the property, Ewelands Retreat feels like a deluxe studio apartment. There is a stylish feel to this luxury cottage, with romantic accents and little touches throughout which gives it a really homely atmosphere.

The kitchen is stocked with top quality Wedgewood crockery and crystal glassware and the cooks among you will delight in the range of Le Crusuet pots and dishes. If you haven't had a chance to make it to the shops yet the goodies on arrival and the honesty bar are a welcome sight.

Perfect for two people, the open plan design feels spacious and cosy at the same time, with a generous sitting room, dining and kitchen area leading onto a wonderfully romantic bedroom - just perfect for a lazy breakfast in bed. For your entertainment there's a SMART TV with wireless Bluetooth speakers and an IPad available for guest's use. The king-size bed boasts a comfy pocket-sprung mattress and is dressed in the finest Egyptian Cotton bed linen.

The bathroom is housed in a separate room and includes a large bath and walk-in power-shower. You'll find complimentary Elemis toiletries as well as fluffy big bath-sheets to snuggle up in. There is also a very handy laundry room which doubles as a storage space. You'll even find some Hunter's Wellies to borrow in here if you want to strike out for a walk across the North York Moors. It's the little extras like this and the devoted attention to detail which makes this romantic Yorkshire Coast cottage such a delight.

French doors open onto a private stone patio with stunning views of the Eskdale Valley below. Throw open the doors and watch the steam trains of the North York Moors Railway puff along below you on their way to Whitby and Pickering. And if you ever tire of the view (which we seriously doubt!) this romantic cottage on the Yorkshire Coast has plenty of other entertainment is provided in the form of a SMART TV, an iPod dock, ceiling surround sound and a library of books, CD's, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Outside Ewelands Retreat has a beautiful stone patio and lawned garden complete with patio furniture and a built-in BBQ. Settle down with a glass of wine, a big slice of cake from Bothams of Whitby and just enjoy the view!

Local Area

The location of Ewelands Retreat is fantastic.  Perched on the hillside of the beautiful Esk Valley in the village of Sleights, you can be hopping on a steam train at Grosmont or feeling the sand between your toes on Whitby's beach within minutes.

Sleights itself is a peaceful little place with a scattering of shops and places to eat.  Just along the road from the cottage you'll find a traditional and welcoming village pub with cask ales, hearty local food and a log fire to keep you warm and toasty in the colder months.    And if you decide to eat in you can pick up some excellent local produce from the bespoke butcher and Deli in the village, Radfords.  If you are enjoying this luxury cottage near Whitby with children there is also a lovely children's park a short walk away.

A few miles east from the cottage takes you to the stunning North Yorkshire coastline, a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, this is proper bucket 'n spade territory. That's not to say it's stuck in the past, in fact the coast's villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tea rooms sitting alongside upmarket champagne and oyster bars.

Although you could happily spend the weekend mooching about the independent shops, bars and cafes along Whitby's bustling medieval streets, it's well worth striking out to sample some of the other coastal villages nearby.  Robin Hood's Bay is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter.  The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea.  Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay are also all within easy driving distance, each with their own unique charm.

Head west from the cottage and you can be in the heart of the North York Moors within minutes.  Take a tour of the impossibly pretty towns and villages in the area, Egton, Danby, Castleton, Rosedale...Or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg, we guarantee on a clear day it will take your breath away.  Suffice to say this area is a walker's paradise and many suggested routes are provided for you in the cottage.

The views are stunning, The Retreat is a studio apartment which is nicely decorated and modern but there is far to much stuff in there-It's cluttered. There was a family staying in the cottage above the Retreat which the noise from above was not appreciated. On an evening it gets cold-the temperature of the under floor heating is set to 16 degrees and you have to phone the owner to get it adjusted!! the logs soon went on the log burner, which shouldn't have to be the case. There was a cob web from the ceiling to the table and the window at the side of the table had several cob webs on the inside, there was broken glass under the chair in front of the door. The owner was present at 9.15am presumably to make sure you are out by 10am which we didn't appreciate.

Hi Nigel.Thank you for your feedback. As you have now stayed at Ewelands Retreat on three occasions we really do appreciate your comments. Most guests love the attention to detail and the cottage feel at Ewelands Retreat. Although the cottages are next to each other the owners have very little comments as regarding noise and have taken every step possible to minimise this.
The underfloor heating is always set to 21 degrees morning and evening and 18 degrees at all other times. As with your previous stays at the cottage the owners are always available by telephone to assist if any issues occur. The owners provide a large basket of logs, kindling and fire lighters and if they are nearby will always replenish for you if requested.
Geoff is always around from 9am preparing for changeovers and also to wish departing guests a safe journey home and never calls on any guests to ensure departure is at 10am.
We do hope to welcome you back to Yorkshire in the not too distant future.

Take Care

The cottage and surrounding area was beautiful and met all our expectations from the descriptions given. The owner Geoff called to see us and was warm and friendly and was only concerned that everything was fine for us and our dog Ruby, The welcome hamper for us and Ruby was very welcoming and thoughtful. I would recommend Ewelands Retreat.
Thank you for making our holiday special

We are regular visitors to Ewelands Retreat and cannot fault the experience. The view from the Retreat out over the Esk Valley never fails to inspire. The local town has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. It is close enough to the sea - whitby ,Sandsend etc. and there are numerous walks nearby and slightly further afield.
The owners are very helpful without interfering. As a holiday retreat it cannot be faulted.
