Welcome to Fig Tree Cottage, an idyllic 2-bedroom, both en suite, country cottage set just a few miles outside the handsome Cathedral City of Ripon. And with cosmopolitan Harrogate just 30 minutes away, it's the perfect choice for an elegant town and country escape.
Entrance to the cottage is via a pretty courtyard, complete with a Fig Tree which gives the cottage its name. Step inside the French doors and into a beautiful open plan living area home to the lounge, kitchen and dining table. Solid oak floorboards underfoot and original artwork by the owner gives the room warmth and character.
The lounge area is home to a large L-shaped sofa, perfect for curling up on by the fire. There's also a charming armchair by the window, just the spot for an afternoon read with a cup of tea. The wood-burning stove keeps everything nice and toasty providing a warm background glow as you settle down for the evening. For your entertainment you'll find a digital TV, DVD player, radio and docking station along with Wi-Fi if you want to catch up online.
Time for lunch. Let's rustle something up in the gorgeous galley kitchen with its pale blue units and corian work-top. All mod cons are provided including an induction hob, dishwasher and fridge with ice-box. Please note there is now a washing machine at Fig Tree. Coffee fans will enjoy the coffee/cappuccino machine and in the summer months you can enjoy your morning cuppa by the Fig Tree in the courtyard. At the heart of the kitchen is a chunky wooden dining table bathed in sunlight from the French doors. A lovely spot to dine whatever the time of day.
Both bedrooms in this beautiful Yorkshire cottage are upstairs. The stunning master bedroom has a dramatic French king-size bed and features a beautiful en suite bathroom. There's a bath to sink into each evening and a shower overhead for morning. The second bedroom is a sweet twin room which also enjoys an en suite shower room.
Outside you'll find a charming courtyard garden complete with a patio and garden furniture. There is also secure storage for bicyles. Lunch al fresco here in the warmer months is a delight, and a gas BBQ is provided for those balmy summer evenings. Pour yourself a glass of fizz and settle down, with only the sound of birdsong for company as you enjoy your sundowner in the Yorkshire countryside.
Fig Tree Cottage welcomes children over 5 years old.
Fig Tree Cottage has a lovely rural location, but is just a few miles from the vibrant Cathedral City of Ripon and less than half an hour to Harrogate. It offers the peace and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales countryside with the delights of cosmopolitan towns just a few miles away.
Close by there's the charming little town of Boroughbridge. Set on the banks of the River Ure, this handsome town was first settled in Roman times, and today offers some good options for eats as well as some lovely walks along the river. And if you're a bit of a foodie, the Michelin-starred Blackswan at Oldstead is close by, and recently voted the best restaurant in the world by TripAdvisor.
Nearby Aldborough runs a fantastic festival every June July with opera, piano and string quartets, a delight if you enjoy classical music. This village is also home to two spectacularly well preserved Roman footpaths.
This area of Yorkshire has enough historical sites to keep you busy for a week with Ripley Castle, Newby Hall and Norton Conyers. And of course, the world-famous Fountains Abbey and the adjoining Studley Royal Water Garden are both within easy striking distance. Three miles west of Ripon, this World Heritage site is deservedly one of the National Trust's most visited locations. As well as the spectacular ruins of a 12th Century Cistercian abbey, the grounds are home to an Elizabethan Mansion, a medieval deer park and some of the most romantic vistas in the country.
There's also Ripon Cathedral. Smaller than its close neighbour, York Minster, Ripon Cathedral is still an awe-inspiring site. In addition, every night for at least 450 years, the Ripon Hornblower has sounded the curfew at 9.00pm from all 4 sides of the obelisk in the market place, come rain or shine, followed by a 15 minutes history of the ceremony and the city, not to be missed!
If you are partial to a flutter, Ripon Race Ground has around 15 meets from April to early September. Known as 'Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse' it has a distinct atmosphere harking back to a bygone era where traditional tea-rooms and bandstands sit alongside the champagne bar.
Harrogate is an absolute must if you're staying here. Encircled by its famous Stray or 1,000 acres of horseshoe shaped grassland, the Victorian Spa town of Harrogate has a bright and breezy open-air feel and is characterised by its impressive floral displays. And as you would expect of such a bustling upbeat town, Harrogate boasts over 300 bars and restaurants together with all the shops, swimming pools, cinemas, parks and gardens you could ever wish for.
And with York and the Yorkshire Dales close by, there are lots of options for day trips!
