Hillcrest Barn is set in Little Ouseburn, a sleepy little hamlet just 20 minutes from central York. There's a village pub within walking distance and the neighbouring village of Great Ouseburn has a Post Office and village shop. This area of the North York Moors is known as the Howardian Hills. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987, the lush pastures and woodlands of the southern Moors play host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market towns. The landscape is particularly well suited to cyclists and walkers.
Take the short drive into York to explore this gem of a medieval city. Walk the historic walls, take a boat trip along the river, indulge in a fat rascal at Betty's Tearooms. And if you have time, have a wander around its many independent shops and boutiques. And in the opposite direction the Victorian Spa town of Harrogate is also within easy reach. Take a turn around the antique shops in the Montpellier Quarter, stop for lunch at Van Zellers, and mooch about the stunning gardens at RHS Harlow Carr. The fantastic family-attraction Stockheld Park is also just a few miles away.
Castle Howard is an absolute must during your stay at Hillcrest Barn. The wonderful series Brideshead Revisited, and now lavish film production, was filmed on location here. This quintessentially English tale of forbidden love and loss of innocence set pre WW11 has the perfect backdrop in this magnificent house and gardens. And when you have soaked in all this glamour make a stop at the fantastic farm shop on the way home to pick up the finest Yorkshire produce for dinner.
The handsome town of Malton is just a few miles away featuring a traditional market square and lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants. If you feel like something really special James Martin's fine-dining restaurant at The Talbot Hotel is also here. A few miles further takes you to the town of Pickering. You can catch a steam train from here taking you all the way to Whitby via some picture-postcard villages and stunning scenery. Pickering itself makes for a nice afternoon's mosey with its pretty houses, shops and tea-rooms.
The beautiful market town of Helmsley is also close by and is well worth a visit. If you fancy a little pampering you'll find a fantastic day Spa here; the Verbena Spa. Perfect for a little me time indulgence! There is a theme park and zoo at Flamingoland just a few miles away [www.flamingoland.co.uk] and Eden Camp, a fascinating modern history museum, is within easy driving distance to the cottage. And with the North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast all within close reach there are countless options for day trips.
Lastly, if you're a bit of a foodie, there are several fantastic places near Hillcrest Barn to try, in fact two restaurants with Michelin stars within half an hour's drive. And of course York is brimming with excellent eateries at every turn.
