About Poacher’s Den

Welcome to Poacher's Den, an exquisite bijou country cottage tucked away in the grounds of a private Nidderdale Estate. Set looking out over the Washburn Valley, the views from the decked garden are stunning, and with gorgeous interiors to match this special little cottage is sure to delight even the most seasoned of travellers! (Please note there is a steep drive down to Poacher's Den)

If you're looking for a stylish country retreat with fabulous walking from the doorstep, Poacher's Den is just the ticket. And for those who like to keep one foot on urban ground, cosmopolitan Harrogate is just 20 minutes' away.

Step inside the cottage to find a well-proportioned open plan living space home to a lounge, dining and kitchen area. A striking lime green wall gives the cottage a contemporary grown up feel. With a nod to the traditional, a beautiful stone fire-place plays host to a cosy wood-burner. The cottage is heated from the log burner and is controlled by a thermostat. All wood is provided for you so get the fire roaring, pour yourself a glass of red and enjoy! There are additional electric heaters if required and hot water is available constantly from a separate system.

Entertainment is provided by way of a large flat screen TV with SKY on the wall. Wi-Fi is provided too if you need to catch up online. Take your pick from the comfy sofa or the handsome armchair and settle down to a movie.

The well-designed kitchen is just around the corner and makes great use of the space. The ash coloured units stock all the equipment you'll need to rustle up a romantic meal for two. You'll arrive to a yummy welcome hamper which includes goodies from the world-famous Betty's Tearooms. For your own supplies there is a fridge and separate freezer.

A washer/dryer is also provided - handy for those muddy walking trousers after a hike across the hills.

The generous dining area sits beside two lovely French dressers and is the perfect spot for long lazy breakfasts over the morning papers. No need to rush today...

The separate bedroom is set at the rear of the cottage, another contemporary room with bags of character and style. A king-size bed offers space to stretch out and an additional TV with SKY in here means you can just chill in your PJs watching your favourite shows.

And when you decide to get ready for the day mosey on in to the fabulous wet room. It has a luxurious feel in here with its elegant grey tiles and huge monsoon shower.

Make your way outside to discover a lovely split decking area, completely private with a patio table and chairs. Set in an elevated position, the views from here are just amazing, so sit back and enjoy them over lunch al fresco. A BBQ is also available on request.

Local Area

Set in private grounds within a larger 100-acre private Yorkshire estate, Poacher's Den enjoys a stunning elevated position overlooking the Washburn Valley in Nidderdale. In addition to the decking, there are miles of moorland and woodland walks right from the doorstep taking in some spectacular local scenery. This area is particularly well known for its reservoirs and you can see several from the headlands surrounding the house.

The area is heaven for walkers who can explore the local estate and beyond without having to jump in the car. It's equally good for cycling enthusiasts, with miles of challenging road and off-road routes nearby. The Estate is happy to arrange for cycles during your stay if you are unable to bring your own.

And if you like to keep one foot on urban ground, head down into Ilkley for the day. Highly regarded for its stylish architecture and beautiful floral displays, there's plenty to see and do in this elegant Victorian town. Take a turn around the gardens down by the river, indulge in afternoon tea at Betty's, explore the many independent shops and boutiques, making sure you pick up something yummy for tea and the several up-market delis in town. And for the nights when cooking seems like too much effort, book dinner in the Michelin-starred Box Tree or head for an Italian on the cool roof Terrace of Piccolinos. Nearby Otley is also a charming Yorkshire town and Chevin Forest park is a great place to blow off some steam.

Venture across to nearby Pateley Bridge, a charming little market town very typical of this area of Yorkshire.  The Main Street is peppered with cafes, restaurants, local stores, quality butchers and a fantastic wine shop - everything you need to stock up for your stay.  You'll also find the self-proclaimed 'Oldest Sweet Shop in England' here dating back to the early 1800s - little has changed inside since then.

Poacher's Den is also just 20 minutes from the cosmopolitan Spa town of Harrogate, a must during any visit to this area. Encircled by its famous 'Stray' or '1,000 acres' of horseshoe shaped grassland, Harrogate has a bright and breezy open air feel and is characterised by its impressive floral displays. And as you would expect of such a bustling upbeat town, Harrogate boasts over 300 bars and restaurants together with all the shops, swimming pools, cinemas, parks and gardens you could ever wish for. Don't leave without indulging in a Fat Rascal and cup of Yorkshire Tea at Bettys!

And if you want to explore Yorkshire's cities, Leeds is just a short drive away and is packed with designer shops, cafes and top notch restaurants. Other nearby attractions include Harewood House, Bolton Abbey and the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr. There is just so much to see and do here!

A lovely little cottage set in a fantastic position with amazing views. Everything was ready for us and some lovely festive touches (we went over the New Year) made it that bit more special. Any communication was quickly responded to, we were really pleased with our stay.

We stayed at the Poachers' Den from 21 to 28 December 2018, and we cannot recommend the more perfect little getaway for a couple over Christmas.

We arrived after a long drive to see a big house and what looked to be a little outbuilding with festive lights. The directions took us to the little building, and once inside we were completely blown away. For what appears to be a small building is the perfect little cottage. So much time and care and attention has been put into the fitting and design; the layout means that you do not feel cramped at all. The lounge area is really snug with the sofa opposite the fire, the dining area is well placed between the lounge and the kitchen to divide the space, and the kitchen for a small cottage is really spacious and excellently laid out. The finish was to an extremely high standard, and what made it even more special was the thought and care that had gone into the decoration for the Christmas season.

The welcome hamper was spectacular and so thoughtful, and kept us going for a bit before we ventured out. There isn't that much close by, which is exactly why we chose it, but the big Booths at Ilkley was a 30 minute drive, and there are some excellent pubs a quick drive away too.

The walking in the area is excellent; while we ventured out to the 3 Peaks area, walks after we arrived and on Christmas Day by the reservoir were so close that we didn't have to go far. Then returning to the cottage and putting on the log fire while making dinner was wonderful, and there were plenty of utensils and trays to make a full Christmas dinner for two as well.

We could not recommend this cottage highly enough. We will certainly look at going back in the future.

This was our second stay and was even better than before as we stayed longer. It is impossible to fault Poachers Den in any way. It is kept in immaculate condition both in repair and cleanliness. The setting is idyllic and it is the most peaceful spot you could wish for. Thanks yet again to Alex and the team for an excellent holiday.
