About Shepherd’s Croft

Welcome to Shepherd's Croft, a beautiful 3-bedroom / 3-bathroom luxury holiday cottage set on the cusp of the North York Moors. This stunning barn conversion is the perfect choice for families looking for something a little bit special with stylish interiors and a wonderful setting looking down towards Castle Howard. Glorious Yorkshire countryside on your doorstep and the fabulous medieval City of York just a few miles away, what's not to love!

As you would expect from the name, Shepherd's Croft is a converted barn set on a small livestock farm in North Yorkshire. Subject to a complete and outstanding refurbishment, this charming stone building dates back to 1750 and has been completely transformed into a unique and luxurious holiday home. The character of the historic building has been wonderfully preserved, from the exposed stone walls and chunky beams to the use of wood and rustic elegant furniture throughout. A stylish 21st Century version of a cosy shepherd's croft.

Most of the accommodation is on ground level. At the heart of the home is a large open-plan area housing the lounge, kitchen and dining room. Exposed beams overhead and warm wooden floors underfoot give this room a warm and welcoming vibe. The comfortable lounge has 2 large comfy sofas gathered around a cosy wood-burner, snuggle into the soft throws and relax after a busy day sightseeing in York. There's also an LCD TV / DVD player and Wi-Fi if you need to catch up online. Traditional games and books are provided too if you fancy some offline family fun by the fire.

The contemporary rustic-styled kitchen in this luxury Yorkshire Cottage boasts chunky wooden work-tops, bespoke kitchen units, clapboard paneling and an elegant Belfast sink. There's a combined oven/hob, dishwasher, fridge-freezer and toaster provided and the cupboards are stocked with everything you'll need to cook a slap-up family dinner. This luxury cottage also has a generous utility room housing a washing machine additional sink and further cupboard space if needed. The dining table sits next to the kitchen and is the perfect spot for busy family breakfasts or candle-lit evenings when the kids have gone to bed.

There are 3 generous bedrooms in this family holiday cottage, and each with its own TV / DVD player and access to their own bathroom. The first bedroom is downstairs, a generous room housing a super-king size bed which can also be set up as two singles as required. There's a fabulous shower-room next to this bedroom which comes complete with a large walk-in monsoon shower. The second bedroom also has a super-king size bed which can be set up as singles. Sitting next to this is a stunning family bathroom complete with a sumptuous roll-top bath and chunky rustic sink. The master bedroom is the only room set on the 1st floor. Set in the eaves of the house this gorgeous room has a double French-upholstered bed and en suite bathroom, again featuring a beautiful roll-top bath. Retreat up here for a long hot soak before stretching out and enjoying the space.

Outside the property there's a lovely sheltered courtyard garden complete stone terrace and outdoor furniture for those sun-drenched summer BBQs. It's also a lovely spot to mosey out to with your morning coffee, glossy mag or the your daily paper under arm? With nothing to disturb you it's a little slice of rural Yorkshire heaven.

There is also secure storage for bikes if required. All logs for the wood burner in this luxury cottage near York are provided.

Local Area

The cottage is located around 30 minutes North of York near Burythorpe, a sleepy little hamlet just a few miles from Castle Howard.  Set on a working farm down a long and private lane there are stunning views across the fields to Castle Howard in the distance. During lambing season the kids will love watching the lambs spring around the fields. Right next door to the cottage is a 12 Acre Woodland Trust Site which is open to the public, perfect for getting the kids out and rediscovering nature. And if you fancy a pint there's a lovely local pub within walking distance..

Shepherd's Croft is set in the rolling Howardian Hills in the Southern reaches of the North York Moors.  Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987, the lush pastures and woodlands of the southern Moors play host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market towns.  The landscape is particularly well suited to cyclists and walkers with miles of stunning off-road walks and cycle paths in every direction. Nearby Kirkham Abbey in particular has some lovely walks along the river Derwent and you can stop for lunch at the Stonetrough pub. And of course you have the Wolds Way to explore.

Castle Howard is an absolute must during your stay at Shepherd's Croft.  The wonderful series Brideshead Revisited, and now lavish film production, was filmed on location here.  This quintessentially English tale of forbidden love and loss of innocence set pre WW11 has the perfect backdrop in this magnificent house and gardens.

The handsome town of Malton is also just a few miles away featuring a traditional market square and lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Malton is fast becoming known for its excellent food and drink offering and is home to the renowned Food Lovers Festival as well as fantastic restaurants, an excellent selection of food shops and great food and drink producers. Malton has always been a working market town and that has never been truer than in the present day. There is a regular livestock market, a traditional market every Saturday and a new Food Lovers Market. The town is filled with charming independent shops as well as some high street favourites. It also has a family owned 3 Screen cinema (one we believe is the smallest commercial screen in the country) playing up to date films on release date for family and discerning audiences. Licensed for alcohol sales you can take a drink in with you to enjoy your film in a real glass!

In fact this whole area is perfect for foodies with countless excellent gastro-pubs to choose from within a 20 mile radius. If you feel like something really special the fine-dining restaurant at The Talbot Hotel at Malton is a good choice. And in the opposite direction the Michelin-Starred Star Inn at Harome is also a great bet.

A few miles further takes you to the town of Pickering.  You can catch a steam train from here taking you all the way to Whitby via some picture-postcard villages and stunning scenery.  Pickering itself makes for a nice afternoon's mosey with its pretty houses, shops and tea-rooms.

The beautiful market town of Helmsley is also close by and is well worth a visit.  If you fancy a little pampering you'll find a fantastic day Spa here; the Verbena Spa.  Perfect for a little me time indulgence!  There is a theme park and zoo at Flamingoland just a few miles away and Eden Camp, a fascinating modern history museum, is within easy driving distance to the cottage.

And of course York itself is just a short drive away. Explore it's maze of cobbled streets, gaze in wonder at York Minster and indulge with a Fat Rascal at Bettys Tearooms. And with the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Coast all within close reach there are countless options for day trips.

We had a super weeks' stay at Shepherd's Croft. We really didn't want to leave, and neither did our labrador who made fast friends with John and Sally's gorgeous sheepdog Ralph. The cottage was lovely and the beds were so comfortable. We made use of the board games one day and there were enough DVDs and books to keep us entertained. The children enjoyed helping John move the sheep one morning and the location was perfect for us. Not having a freezer was a small inconvenience, otherwise we were very happy indeed. As for location - well you are spoilt really.....we visited the North York Moors, York, Scarborough, Malton, Flamingo Land then ran out of time. Will definitely be back.

Overall really enjoyed our stay, the hosts were lovely, stunning location and cottage. Could have been a little more practical, no freezer and no drawers in one of the bedrooms.

We had a lovely weeks stay in a the beautiful barn conversion. The garden was ideal for our family and our dog. The surrounding area was fab with lots of interesting places to visit within easy driving distance. I guess our only negative was the lack of a freezer. On holiday a G and T with ice is a must as is ice lollys for the kids. The owners John and Sally were exceptionally helpful and ice was offered which was great but still not ideal.
