Station House is set just outside the pretty village of Wensley in gorgeous Wensleydale. The scene is one of lush valleys, mellow pastures and pretty villages criss-crossed with acres of green fields and dry-stone walls along its 40-mile length. You are surrounded on all sides by this exquisite landscape but have the benefit of a vibrant market town just a few miles away. There's also a great village pub within walking distance.
Once the Station Master's House, Station House is set right beside the Wensleydale Railway line. It still operates with tourist trains running on weekends throughout the year, and every day in the summer months. The line runs all the way from the market town of Northallerton to the charming little village of Redmire in the Yorkshire Dales. It's known as one of the most scenic railways in the UK, so its well worth booking a trip. Particularly one of their regular special services such as the Afternoon Tea, Gin or Ale trains!
If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker's paradise. And there are plenty of options for cycling too in Tour De France country. You can strike out literally from the doorstep up towards Penhill or Castle Bolton, or take one of the other many walking routes in Wensleydale.
Middleham, one of Yorkshire's loveliest villages is just a few miles away. Famous for its castle (once home to Richard III) it's also home to several race-horse trainers; you will see and hear the horses being lead through the village up to the gallops every day. And to top it off there is a lovely collection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. We love it so much it features in our Top 10 Prettiest Yorkshire Villages. Just a few miles out of the village is the fantastic attraction The Forbidden Corner. Regularly voted the best attractions in Yorkshire, it's also well worth a look even if there are no children in your party.
Nearby you'll find the charming market town of Leyburn. Leyburn is an archetypical slice of Dales market town life. You'll find traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around the handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction house outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby historic town of Richmond is similar in many ways, and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.
Wensleydale is also famed for its waterfalls, the most notable being Aysgarth Falls, just a few miles away, and Hardraw Force. Wensleydale also borders the wild and magnificent dales of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale to the North. A great choice for a day trip if you want to get away from it all.
There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights and attractions all within close range of Station House. Bolton is just a few miles away and the gorgeous villages of West Burton and Askrigg are within easy driving distance, so lots of choice for things to do if you want to get out and about.
And when you need to refuel stop at one of the areas many excellent gastro pubs. As well as the much-loved Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton there's the Blue Lion at East Witton and The Sandpiper Inn at Leyburn with many more all within a short drive of the cottage.
