And there are established footpaths and walks directly from the door if you feel like striking out on foot without the car one day. There are a host of excellent pubs and restaurants in the area all within easy reach too.
Beyond the village the handsome town of Bedale is worth a visit. Stop for a coffee before making your way around the town's antique shops. Further on into the Dales you'll find the charming market town of Leyburn. Leyburn is an archetypical slice of Dales market town life. You'll find lovely traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around the handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby town of Richmond is similar in many ways, and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.
The cottage is also close to the pretty market town of Northallerton where handsome Georgian houses line the long main street. The wonderful Betty's Tearooms is here as is a fantastic local deli, Lewis & Cooper's Food Emporium and of course the quintessentially Yorkshire department store of Barkers.
A few miles in the other direction takes you to the charming town of Yarm set on the banks of the River Tees. Yarm is a cosmopolitan little place, with a host of great shops, cafes bars and restaurants.
