The Mistal is a charming 2-bedroom stone cottage nestling happily next to a Grade II Listed 18th Century corn mill in Wensleydale. Set on the edge of a little hamlet, this very sweet cottage has extensive gardens including a mill pond and is surrounded by stunning countryside in every direction. There's also a decent foodie pub within walking distance.
The Mistal was an old cow shed in its former life which today has been converted into a very comfortable and surprisingly spacious 4 Star Gold holiday cottage. We love the extra wide wooden doors throughout the cottage, a reminder of the buildings age, and the handsome wooden Yorkshire slider windows.
Step inside to discover a generous family-sized kitchen which includes a washing machine and dishwasher. Plenty of room for 4 people around the kitchen table and it's a warm comfortable spot for dining. Moving next door into the sitting room, again a spacious room with a comfy sofa and several other chairs. We like the eclectic style in here, with its gorgeous vintage Danish sideboard and contemporary lighting. There's a real flame fire for those cosy evenings in and a TV / DVD player to settle down in front of. And of course Wi-Fi is provided too. Top green credentials in this property as its heated by am eco-efficient Biomass boiler...
Make your way down a small set of stairs to find the bedrooms and family bathroom. The master bedroom has a double bed and sumptuous linen curtains. And the other end of the hall there is a delightful twin room with white cast iron beds, perfect for little ones. The recently renovated family bathroom sits between the two and has a bath with a shower overhead. Perfect for a soak in the tub after a day walking, or scrubbing the kids clean after they've been exploring the gorgeous gardens here.
This year sees the addition of a third double bedroom with shower and wc a few yards away across the courtyard. Please contact us about occupancy of this additional accommodation.
Immediately to the front of the cottage is a very pleasant stone courtyard which is fully enclosed. But the star of the show has to be the extended and well maintained grounds which are fully available for you to explore and use. They include a peaceful mill pond and a large cut lawned area, the perfect spot to throw out the picnic blanket and settle down for lunch. There are ducks and chickens wandering around and you may be lucky and spot the resident wood-pecker family too. And if you have younger children they will love the football goal, swings and other outdoor toys.
For those of you who like cycling there is a secure lock up for bike storage.
The Mistal is set on the edge of a sleepy and very pretty little Hamlet in deepest Wensleydale. There are some lovely walks right from the door, and the next village along boasts a great foodie pub. Heading West will take you over the high ground of Nidderdale and down into Pateley Bridge, a very popular and bustling market town. A few miles in the opposite direction takes you further up into Wensleydale with the wonderful Jervaulx Abbey and Brymor ice-cream parlour just a few minutes' drive away.
The nearest town is Masham, a gorgeous and thriving market town where handsome old Georgian buildings gather politely around a cobbled square. Every year there is a famous sheep fair held in the square. There are lots of delights to discover in the town including an excellent fine dining restaurant, a host of lovely cafes, a top notch wine shop and several very good butchers. And if you enjoy a tipple or two, it's also home to the world famous Black Sheep & Theakstons Breweries too. You can visit both, sample their wares in their own pubs and take some home for later too!
The Mistal is also just a short drive to Middleham, one of Yorkshire's loveliest villages. Famous for its castle (once home to Richard III) it's also home to several race-horse trainers; you will see and hear the horses being lead through the village up to the gallops every day. And to top it off there is a lovely collection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops.
Or how about a morning visiting the charming market town of Leyburn. Leyburn is an archetypal slice of Dales market town life. You'll find traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around the handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby historic town of Richmond is similar in many ways, and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.
There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights all within close range of The Mistal. Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle are just a few miles away and the gorgeous villages of West Burton and Askrigg are within easy driving distance, so lots of choice for things to do if you want to get out and about. If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker's paradise. And there are plenty of options for cycling too in Tour De France country. Our concierge will be more than happy to recommend some walks and cycle routes for you if required.
And when you need to refuel stop at one of the areas many excellent gastro pubs. Our favourites include the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton and the Blue Lion at East Witton, all within a short drive of the cottage.
