About West Steading

Breath-taking views, stunning interiors and a village pub a stone's throw away. Just a few of the reasons why you'll fall head over heels in love with West Steading.

The North York Moors is an incredibly special place. Not only is the countryside here simply breath-taking but its packed to the rafters with attractions to visit, places to see and excellent restaurants and gastro-pubs at every turn. That's why it's so exciting when you find a holiday cottage like West Steading to explore it from. Without doubt one of our most idyllic holiday cottages, its rustic charm and exceptional attention to detail ensures you will want to come back time and time again.

Let's start with the beautiful kitchen. Fully stocked to 5 Star standards you'll find everything you need including children's crockery and cutlery if required. You'll also arrive to a sumptuous hamper filled with lots of little extras including, eggs, fresh bread and a bottle of wine. The heated stone floor and exposed oak beams are just the icing on the cake.

Moving on to the country-chic sitting room. What better way to finish a busy day's sight-seeing than curling up by the wood-burner with a nice glass of red. With Satellite Channels and Wi-Fi available there's lots to keep you entertained. That's if you can drag yourself away from the view!

Both bedrooms in West Steading boast king size beds, LCD TVs and cosy faux-fur bed throws. They're also en suite, the first enjoying a bath tub to sink into and the second a walk-in shower. As you would expect from this standard of cottage the bed linen is of the highest quality.

Immediately to the front of this luxury Yorkshire Cottage is an enclosed South-facing garden which includes a lawned area and a gravel patio. Garden furniture is provided so you can enjoy lunch al fresco in the warmer months. The views from this garden are truly spectacular, and as this is a tiny little hamlet the only noise out here is the sound of birdsong in the air.

Local Area

West Steading is set in a pretty little hamlet (complete with a local pub) in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. This particular Dale is famed for its daffodil walk when each Spring the river banks come alive with the yellow flowers, said to be planted originally by the monks who settled on this land many hundreds of years ago.

Lesser known that its Yorkshire cousin the Dales, the North York Moors are literally on your doorstep. This glorious expanse of heather-clad countryside is simply stunning, and it's well worth taking some time to explore it properly.   The Moors cover an area of almost 600 square miles and like the Dales you can easily find yourself miles from anywhere relatively quickly.  But there is something distinctly more civilised and less remote about the Moors.  There is a sense of wilderness, particularly on top of the high central moorlands, but its cast in comforting soft focus.

This is serious walking country, so if you enjoy donning the old walking boots and striking out into the countryside this cottage has the perfect location. No need to get in the car at all, there are some truly breath-taking walking trails from the door. And of course the same is true for cycling. There are also countless picture-card villages to explore within a few miles including the chocolate box Hutton-le-Hole, Rosedale Abbey, Danby and Goathland to name just a few.

Close by you also have the fantastic town of Helmsley. At the heart of the town square is a statue of Lord Feversham, a distant ancestor of the current Lord who resides in Duncombe Park.  This stunning baroque mansion sits on the outskirts of town and is a good choice for an afternoon's sightseeing.  If you want to indulge some more architectural desires, the equally grand Nunnington Hall a few miles south east of the town is another grand abode worth a peek.

Helmsley is a foodies heaven, packed with exquisite tea-rooms, cafes and on the pulse organic delis, It's also surrounded by some of the best gastro pubs in the UK, be sure not to miss the Star Inn at Harome, excellent food and a lovely setting. Tucked alongside these culinary delights are lots of unique shops, galleries and antique dealers, easily enough to build up an appetite for lunch.

The neighbouring town of Pickering is similar in many ways and is host to its own delightful set of shops, cafes and restaurants.  A few miles further on takes you to Thornton-Le-Dale, a very pretty North York Moors village with thatched houses and a sleepy little brook.  Stop for some ice-cream here and remind yourself how nice life in the slow lane feels like.

You're also close to Castle Howard, York and the Yorkshire coast, so lots of choice for day trips.

Had a great stay, clean and well equipped. Tastefully decorated, lots of attention to detail. The beds were comfy and the bathrooms had good showers. rather liked the bathroom mirror lighting as that has always been an issue in other cottages and hotels stayed in.Location good for us as we like to be away from the hustle and bustle. Pub across the road good and welcoming. Shame the lounge area is upstairs at the back, felt dark when we were there in July with strong sunshine everyday, also no view . Although outdoor area has a bench and table there is only one lounger so we had to take turns to sit in it. Pleased to find that a fence has been added between west and east steading to give privacy when outdoors, was a bit unsure about booking as photos don't show this. We hope to return, might try one of the other cottages.
