What makes for a great family holiday? For me in today’s online world it’s a place where everyone (including the kids) can unplug themselves and reconnect with the natural world.
Rock Lobster offers the opportunity to do just that.
Set 100 yards from the sea on a picturesque headland in East Yorkshire the location is simply magical, and the cottage itself is just lovely.
Having spent a long Bank holiday weekend here soaking up the sights and sounds of Flamborough Head, here’s why we think Rock Lobster is the perfect family holiday home.
The call of the sea
Spanning all ages, there is something undeniably magical about the call of the sea. On the short drive out from Flamborough village to the headland, a sense of anticipation grew in the car, the kids straining to catch first glimpse of the water. Set just a stone’s throw from a coastal path leading down to a private secluded beach, the location of Rock Lobster is hard to beat.
When the tides out, introduce the kids to the joy of rock pools and see what mini beasts they can discover lurking in the water…
A sense of yesteryear
Flamborough Head feels like your childhood holidays of years ago, with none of the noise and chaos of larger seaside resorts. Directly in front of the cottage is a large green field perfect for older kids playing out with a ball, and to the rear of the cottage a lovely west facing garden ideal with younger ones to totter about in.
There’s a family friendly bistro set at the base of the lighthouse directly in front, and just around the corner the most gorgeous little traditional café offering yummy cooked breakfasts and the most AMAZING chips.
There’s also a traditional seaside shop by the lighthouse stocked with the obligatory buckets and spades – everything you’ll need to keep little ones happy all week.
Wildlife Adventures
This part of the Yorkshire Coastline is positively teaming with wildlife. We spotted a baby seal on the beach just in front of the cottage and lots more playing out to sea.
The short drive up to Bempton Cliffs just a few miles North is a must, kids and adults alike will be blown away by the sheer volume of seabirds clinging to cliffs with Puffins and Gannets stealing the show.
It is a real joy to see children’s faces light up with the sights and sounds of nature, and not an iPad in sight.
Family friendly proportions
Rock Lobster is perfectly sized for small families, with a spacious king size bedroom to the front of the cottage and a separate twin room to the rear.
All of the accommodation is on ground level and the kitchen dining room is a lovely family-friendly space. We loved settling the kids down to a fireside movie in the lounge while we enjoyed watching the lighthouse fire up from the porch.
As well as a walk-in shower there’s a separate bath – always a plus when you have little sandy legs and windswept hair to clean.
Easy coastal walks
The beautiful beaches of North and South Landing are both within walking distance from the cottage along the coastal paths.
At just under 2 miles, they are suitable for even little legs, and if the walk back feels like too much you can hop on the regular bus service. Take some binoculars and see what bird and sea life you can spot on the way.
Lots of great attractions
As well as the natural pleasures on your doorstep, this area of the coast has lots of other attractions for families. The newly built Splash complex in Bridlington offers hours of entertainment with its fun pool, slides and climbing walls. It also has a nice café looking out over the sea.
We’d also recommend the Bondville Model village and the beautiful woodland walk down to Danes Dyke beach. And there are a host of other pretty villages and beaches to explore in the area, we just touched the surface with our long weekend here in May…
