There’s something rather magical about The Old Nail Shed holiday cottage. This dog-friendly romantic retreat is tucked away in the pretty village of Sawdon and looks out across to the surrounding North York Moors from a dramatic double height window.
Here are just some of the reasons we think The Old Nail Shed makes the perfect dog-friendly retreat for two.
A romantic holiday cottage steeped in history…
As you might have guessed from the name this historic stone building was once the shed where the local Blacksmith stored his nails.
Next door the original Blacksmith’s workshop has been turned into a dog-friendly country pub called The Anvil Inn. Lots of the original features have been kept including the original Anvil which has pride of place in the characterful bar area.
The Old Nail Shed itself has been completely transformed into a unique and luxurious holiday cottage with underfloor heating beneath black slate floors, a bespoke wrought iron spiral staircase and a romantic mezzanine level bedroom.
It’s all kept light and bright with the wow-factor feature window….
A bedroom with a view…
Wake up to glorious views from the romantic mezzanine level bedroom. It looks across to the North York Moors and the special glass used means that you don’t have to worry about people looking in (even though you can see out).
If you are worried about privacy though there is a handsome screen you can pull across when the lights are on.
With plush carpets, striking wallpaper that features colourful peacocks and purple cushions there’s a decadent feel about this room.
There’s clever storage built around the bed too (in a dramatic black) so you can hang up your holiday wardrobe.
A bath under the stars…
Ok so the bath isn’t technically under the stars but there are star-like twinkly lights in the ceiling above.
A soak in the bateau style free-standing bath is a sumptuous treat and the perfect way to finish the day after exploring the surrounding moorland. The fixtures and fittings in here are top quality and it all feels very luxurious and rather special.
(Plus don’t forget if you do fancy seeing some actual stars that the North York Moors is renowned for it’s dark skies).
A country pub that’s right next door
Who doesn’t love a stroll to the pub when on a short break or holiday? Well very handily The Old Nail Shed has a dog-friendly pub that’s right next door.
It’s run by the same friendly husband and wife team as the holiday cottage so you know you’ll get a warm welcome there too.
The Anvil Inn includes a main bar, separate dining area (although you are welcome to eat in the bar if you prefer) and even a cosy snug if you fancy enjoying a quieter drink in front of the fire (or even a spot of private dining).
All the food is home-made using fresh ingredients from local suppliers – and if you are Vegetarian, Vegan or looking for Gluten Free you’ll find lots of suitable dishes on the menu. The menu is designed to be affordable (apart from steak the most expensive dish is £16) but with a touch of fine dining too.
If you just fancy a quick drink before heading back to The Old Nail Shed (the kitchen in the holiday cottage has everything you need to whip up a romantic meal), you’ll find plenty of options too.
Regular local beers include Daleside and Black Sheep and there’s usually a guest ale or two available too. There’s non-alcoholic ciders if you aren’t drinking (The Old Nail Shed makes a great choice for a babymoon) and lots of gins to choose from too.
A setting in the North York Moors with lots to explore
The setting of The Old Nail Shed is glorious and it’s well worth making time to go exploring. The cottage is cycle-friendly and you can stow your bikes in a lockable shed to keep them safe during your stay. If you are walking with a dog there’s a handy hosepipe outside the cottage to clean off muddy paws!
You’ll find an abundance of walks and cycle routes to try in the North York Moors and this romantic holiday cottage is close to both the Yorkshire Coast and Dalby Forest. There are pretty nearby villages such as Thornton-le-Dale and scenic spots like Troutdale are ideal for a romantic walk.
There’s plenty of wildlife to spot in the moorland too with Forge Valley Woods Nature Reserve nearby. It’s also well worth grabbing some binoculars and going birdspotting at Raptor Viewpoint in Wykeham Forest.
