Tate Studies – a historic holiday home in Richmond !

You can enjoy the best of town and country living with a stay at the 2-bedroom Grade II listed Tate Studies in Richmond. Not only is it surrounded by a selection of cafes, restaurants and shops in Richmond but it has a rich history (involving Lewis Carroll) and the peaceful garden looks out over the River Swale. You can have your cake and eat it at this North Yorkshire Holiday Home

A prime position in Richmond

Edwina’s Bakery is just over the road from Tate Studies.

You can’t beat the location of Tate Studies in Richmond – you literally walk through a gate on historic Frenchgate, down some steps and you are at the property! There’s a gorgeous bakery called Edwina’s that is just over the road where you can purchase a morning coffee and cake (you’ll probably get a taste for the cakes after sampling the one in the welcome hamper).

Richmond Luxury Holiday Home

A few steps more and you are right in the market square with cafes, shops and restaurants galore.

A peaceful spot overlooking the river

Tate Studies combines the best of both worlds – you may be right in the centre of Richmond but head down the steps to the property and you’ll find a gorgeous garden, green fields and a view of the river.

Tate's Studies looks out over the River Swale from its prime position in Richmond.

It feels like a peaceful escape in the country where you can enjoy some lovely peace and quiet. Follow a path by the side of the garden for a riverside walk and the nearby waterfalls make a very scenic spot for a picnic.

Alternatively, you can just spread out on the huge lawn and enjoy your surroundings or take a seat at the patio furniture for a spot

A fascinating history

A plaque showing Lewis Carroll was once a boarder at Swale House - Tates Studies was the study at the time!

Tate Studies dates all the way back to 1750 and this listed building was once used as study rooms for the impressive Swale House. Lewis Carroll boarded at Swale House with headmaster James Tate (and even etched his initials into the top floor window where he stayed) so may well have started his creative writing while hard at work in Tate Studies!

Swale House was also used to house wounded officers during the First World War.

During the first world war Swale House was used to house wounded officers and more recently it was the home of Richmondshire District Council.

The beautiful master bedroom

My favourite room at Tate Studies is the only room on the first floor – the beautiful master bedroom.

It’s gorgeously romantic and has been beautifully designed with nods to Lewis Carroll’s most famous work, Alice in Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland

I particularly love the feature circular window where you can look out over the gardens and the original ceiling beams that you can look up to while enjoying a lazy breakfast in bed. The quirky chest of drawers and trinkets mage you feel like your in a magical Lewis Carroll inspired world.

A top quality finish

It’s clear to see that Tate Studies has been a labour of love for its owners who have used top quality materials throughout to restore this building to its former Georgian glory outside and make a comfortable holiday home inside.

No expense has been spared on the underfloor heating, handsome kitchen, or chunky wooden flooring.

Both bedrooms come with an en-suite shower room and finishing touches like a top-notch Bang & Olufsen Blue Tooth speaker, broadband throughout and a TV in each bedroom make this a great place to relax and unwind.

Lots to see and do nearby

There’s plenty to do whether you decide to stay in Richmond or head a bit further afield. The location of the town at the Northern Tip of the Dales means you can head to pretty villages such as Reeth and enjoy some scenic walks.

The charming village of Reeth, just a few miles away, has lots of cafes, pubs and a restaurant to discover.

If you are a keen cyclist there is a handy bike shed to store yours in or you can head to the nearby Dales Bike Centre and hire one.

You can’t visit Richmond without walking up to the impressive Norman Castle that looks out over the town and The Station is a converted Victorian Railway Station that is well worth a visit.

It’s home to a cinema, an art gallery, a bar and restaurant and even a micro brewery.
