Top 10 tea rooms in Yorkshire holiday cottages

Top 10 tea rooms in Yorkshire

Ed 14 July 2019

There are a lot of things Yorkshire does exceedingly well: breathtaking scenery, real ale and food to name but three. But perhaps one thing stands head and shoulders above the rest: a proper good cup of tea in a proper good tea room! We've had the pleasure of trying rather a lot of these tea rooms on our travels, so we've pulled together this list of ten of the best. There are countless more which could be on the list, and if you have a particular favourite we would love to hear about it!

It comes as no surprise that top of the list is the iconic Bettys. A much-loved Yorkshire institution which counts locals and tourists among its army of passionate supporters. There are a total of 6 different tea rooms across Yorkshire now, with the flagship ones in York and Harrogate. We love the old world charm and immaculate attention to detail. There are few finer pleasures in life than settling down to a buttery fat rascal and cup of tea in Bettys.

2. The Black Swan Tea Room - Helmsley

The Black Swan Tea Room

If you had to design the perfect tea room, we're pretty sure this is how it would look. Think pristine white table cloths, warm wooden floors, solid oak panelling and a beautiful patisserie nestling in the corner. The sandwiches here are excellent, as is the service. The classic cream tea is particularly good.

3. Lavenders - Thornton-le-Dale

Image: Lavenders

This gorgeous tea room is set in the chocolate-box village of Thorton-le-Dale in the North York Moors National Park. With an idyllic setting by the beck overlooking the village green, Lavenders is on to a winner before you even set foot in the door. But once you do, the charming tea room only adds to the pleasure where sugar bowls sit contentedly under lace covers and the scent of lavender is all around. You can choose to sit inside or out, and on a summer's day sitting down to a nice pot of tea with the babbling water in the background is heavenly.

4. Lockton Tea rooms and Gallery - Lockton

Part art gallery, part tea rooms and all set within a very pretty village in the North York Moors. Very cosy interiors with original art and crafts from local artists all around you. Lots of delicious home baked treats on offer from scones to diet-busting cakes.

5. Bothams - Whitby

Bothams

Another Yorkshire institution, the classic Botham Tea rooms have been a fixture of the Whitby streets for over 100 years. Founded by the indomitable Elizabeth Botham in 1865 this traditional tea room is still as popular as ever, and their chocolate chip biscuits are to die for.

6. The Old School Tearoom - Grassington

Set in an old school house near the popular village of Grassington in the Dales, this on-the-pulse contemporary tea room has plenty of substance and style. We highly recommend the vintage afternoon tea, an indulgent delight of sandwiches, scones and cake which should be savoured as long as possible!

7. The Bivouac Cafe - Masham

The Bivouac Cafe

Bit naughty this one as it's borderline more cafe than tea room, but the setting is so fantastic we just had to include it. On a warm summer's day you can sit out on the patio and enjoy stunning views down the valley, and it does a right good slice of home-made cake.

8. Middleton Post Office Tea Parlour

A curious little place - blink and you'll miss it! With a real vintage 1940s vibe this is traditional tea drinking at its best. Everything is served on the finest china and the dainty little cakes are just scrummy.

9. Marie Antoinette's - Whitby

Marie Antoinette's

I had one of the best scones I've ever tasted in this cafe, and few have bettered it since. Stumble into Marie Antoinette's after a windswept walk along Whitby beach and settle down to a delicious cream tea. What weekends are made for.

10. Quarmby's - Sheriff Hutton

Quarmbys is a tearoom and delicatessen that sells a range of delicious home-made goodies with gluten and dairy free bakes available. You’ll find options like rhubarb and ginger spelt scones on the menu and it’s up to you whether you plump for a full afternoon tea or a quick light bite. The café has a lovely setting in the village of Sheriff Hutton, in the heart of Yorkshire’s Howardian Hills.

Plan your getaway to Yorkshire

If you fancy sampling the delights of these Yorkshire Tea Rooms for yourself, you'll find an array of gorgeous holiday cottages in pretty villages and vibrant market towns throughout the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast.
