The York Maze isn’t just any old maze, it is home to the largest maze in Britain and also has enough activities to entertain even the most demanding of children. Just a few miles outside York City Centre and down the road the York Designer Shopping outlet, we think it really does make a great family day out.
What’s more this year’s star attraction, the giant Maize Maze pays homage to one of the countries favourite children’s authors – Roald Dahl. It is only open until the 5th September so you’ll have to get your skates on to enjoy this phizz-wizzing creation!
The Maize Maze
The giant maize maze is the central attraction at York Maze and is made from over 1 million maize plants covering an area larger than the equivalent of 8 football pitches. This living creation is planted each year and then harvested for feed after York Maze has closed for the year. It’s no surprise giving its whopping size that it is the largest maze in Britain and one of the largest in the world so try not to get too lost in there!
Roald Dahl Theme
Because the maize maze is replanted from scratch every year, it is given a new theme for each season it is open with the various shapes created by farmer, Tom Pearcy. The 2016 theme is Roald Dahl to coincide with 100 years since his birth and the maze features 4 of his famous creations; Willy Wonka, The BFG, The Enormous Crocodile and the Fantastic Mr Fox, so is sure to delight fans of all ages..
Previous themes have included Doctor Who, Harry Potter and James Bond.
Other mazes include the Maze of Illusions with various optical tricks and puzzles to amaze and delight adults and children alike and Mineshaft Maze which is a 3D labyrinth or bridges, tunnels and walkways.
As well as the mazes there are a variety of attractions to keep your children entertained include the inflatable ‘Cobstacle Course’, the giant bouncy ‘Jumping Pillow’ and the wooden Climbing Zone with pendulum swings, balance beams and a cargo net to scramble across. A brand new Crowmania ride involves a fun (and occasionally wet) trip round the grounds on a giant trailer and nothing is what it seems in the House of Cornfusion.
