About Miller's Retreat

Miller’s Retreat is a spacious contemporary 3-bedroom cottage nestling on the banks of Crakehall Beck in Little Crakehall, a picture-postcard Yorkshire Dales village. With a private terrace looking out towards the Beck and the fantastic landscapes of Wensleydale and Nidderdale just a few miles away, it’s an idyllic spot for a relaxing country break.

Set beside one of the few working flour mills in the country (run by the cottage owners), Miller’s Retreat is a newly refurbished luxury holiday cottage. The layout of the interior is designed to maximise the lovely view of the water, so the sitting room is on the lower ground level opening out onto a large terrace with bridge over the stream. This sunny open space is also the dining area with the kitchen down here too. Throw open the patio doors and have your breakfast with the sound of birdsong and the gentle lapping of the water as a backdrop.

Back upstairs to the three very generous bedrooms. All of the bedrooms in Miller’s Retreat have either king-size or super king-size beds which can be made up as doubles or singles, ideal for families or groups of friends with various sleeping arrangements. All of the bedrooms are also en suite, two with a shower and the third featuring a bath with shower over. Each bedroom feels luxuriously roomy and with classic colours used throughout they feel peaceful and calm – the perfect combination for an excellent night’s sleep.

Outside Miller’s Retreat there are several seating areas, the first is the large terrace by the patio doors, there is also a sheltered spot alongside this where the garden furniture sits. Head up the external stone steps and you’ll find a third little patio, just outside one of the bedrooms. Wander over the private bridge to the rear of the cottage and wander along the banks of the Beck. It opens up into a lovely open green space with meadows and trees all around… Take a picnic and enjoy the slow pace of river life. Head up in the opposite direction and a public footpath across the fields takes you through open countryside. Or simply stroll up to the gorgeous village green, have a drink at the village pub and settle down to watch the cricket team battle it out by the large manor house.

Local Area

Miller’s Retreat is located in Little Crakehall just outside the market town of Bedale. The village itself is very pretty, a large village green is overlooked by the manor house and the village pub, the local cricket ground is right in the middle of the village as is a lovely children’s park. The walk to the village green from the cottage is a pleasant five minute stroll across the river.

Beyond the village the handsome town of Bedale is worth a visit. Stop for a coffee before making your way around the towns antique shops. In the opposite direction you’ll find the charming market town of Leyburn. Leyburn is an archetypical slice of Dales market town life. You’ll find lovely traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around the handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby town of Richmond is similar in many ways, and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.

There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights all within close range of Miller’s Retreat. Asygarth Falls and Bolton Castle are just a few miles away and the gorgeous villages of West Burton and Askrigg are within easy driving distance, so lots of choice for things to do if you want to get out and about. If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker’s paradise. Our concierge will be more than happy to recommend some walks for you if required.

And when you need to refuel stop at one of the areas many excellent gastro pubs. Our favourites include the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton, the Blue Lion at East Witton and the Wyvill Arms Arms Constable Burton.

A stunning cottage in a beautiful location and equipped to a high standard. Little Crakehall is a great base from which to see a great deal of this part of Yorkshire and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property.

Upon arrival the delightful couple Lionel and Caoline were there to greet us with big friendly smiles. We were shown around our wonderful home for the week and were very impressed by the size of the rooms and quality of fittings at Millers Retreat. Next day Caroline provided us with a tasty fruit cake which kept us going for a week. We were fortunate to have four beautiful sunny days out of our seven and explored the Dales around Leyburn, Reeth and up through Arkengarthdale to the Tan Hill Inn. The views were spectacular and driving around the narrow country lanes was such a change, if at times hair raising, from monotonous motorways. Finally we visited Bowes to see Dotheboys' Hall, made famous in Dickens's 'Nicholas Nickleby'. This was a holiday to remember and we hope to return later in the year.
