In what has been a phenomenal few weeks for Yorkshire, with awards and recognition raining down from all sorts of places, it’s hard to believe things are going to get even more exciting next year.   But they are!  It’s coming…

The biggest sporting event in the World is on its way to Yorkshire next July, the 2014 Grand Depart for the Le Tour De France.

Forgive us for hugging our knees in excitement at Gorgeous Cottages but we are already feeling a little giddy about it.  Here’s why you should be too!

5 reasons to get excited about the Le Tour De France Grand Depart in Yorkshire

1. 100 Day Cultural Festival

Grand Depart Cultural Festival Yorkshire

It’s not all about lycra and bicycles. Long before the cyclists arrive Welcome to Yorkshire will be celebrating this unique event in Yorkshire’s history with a 100 day cultural festival. Running from 27th March 2014 the festival promises to showcase the very best of Yorkshire artistic talent and offers everyone the chance to enjoy all that Yorkshire has to offer. For more information take a look at Le Tour website – details below.

2.  Home-made talent

Unless you’ve been living in a cave somewhere very far away in the last few years you will know all about Britain’s wealth of cycling talent.  Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Chris Froome.  All huge names in the sport and all likely to be involved next year – it will be absolutely thrilling to see them flying past in the flesh.  What you may not know is that Harrogate is where Mark Cavendish has his routes, it would be sheer romance to see him lead the sprint finish here next July.

3.  Welcoming the world to Yorkshire

Getting back to the race itself, the challenging route has just been announced and will test the professional cyclists to the limit.  If you want to ride in their tracks you can with easy to follow permanent signs, now visible along the Grand Depart route.  Even if you’re a bit of a good-weather cyclist, as I am, there is a certain thrill in riding the same roads as the greats of the sport.

5.  Time to Party

Harrogate - Grand Depart Yorkshire finishes here on day one

The Grand Depart is set over two days starting on the 5th and 6th of July in Leeds and York respectively, with the sprint finishes in Harrogate and Sheffield.  All of these stunning Yorkshire cities are getting ready to host a party of global proportions.  Even if you’re not overly interested in the cycling, these Yorkshire cities and towns will be buzzing this weekend.  Everyone who is anyone in Yorkshire will be there, so you should come too!
