Sometimes you find a holiday cottage that you know you must return to at least once in your life. Higher Scarcliffe in the Yorkshire Dales is one of those places. This exquisite luxury cottage is quite simply one of the finest holiday homes in Yorkshire, and beyond.
A magical mix of location, space, grandeur, style and comfort; a heady cocktail of holiday cottage heaven. And I haven’t even mentioned the views yet – oh my…
I spent a weekend in January here with my family and, despite the cold, the howling wind and the rain, fell absolutely head-over-heels in love. You can see the images of our stay on our Facebook page. So, how did Higher Scarcliffe near Skipton become one of my most loved Yorkshire holiday cottages?
5 Things to love about Higher Scarcliffe Cottage, Yorkshire Dales
1. Man Needs Fire!
For me, there’s nothing better than curling up by a fire or wood-burning stove with a large glass of red. Higher Scarcliffe has the choice of two sitting rooms to do this in, both with wood-burning stoves. The first is a huge and terribly grand double height living space; perfect for family time or gathering around pre-dinner with drinks and nibbles.
The second is a cosier affair, with its warm red walls and classic style. No less grand though, the huge stone fireplace reminds you this is a building which has stood here for hundreds of years. Something which just adds to your sense of comfort and warmth.
2. The luxury of space
Few of us are lucky enough to live with the luxury of space. So when you stay in a luxury holiday cottage which has it in abundance there is a palpable effect on your mood. My young children in particular visibly relaxed with room to roam and places to discover. Higher Scarcliffe has three comfortable bedrooms but it actually feels much much larger, and credit to the owners for choosing to maintain the sense of space over squeezing in another bedroom.
3. The sense of style
Higher Scarcliffe is one of the most stylish holiday cottages I’ve stayed in. The owners have achieved a very unique look, a combination of traditional and contemporary which is actually quite difficult to get right. Beautiful antique furniture sits comfortably alongside stunning large pieces of modern art, many by the fabulous Yorkshire artist Kitty North. And as Kitty’s work is quite often of the Yorkshire Dales, you have a very real sense of your location, inside and out. This luxury cottage has the sort of style you want in your own home…
4. A view like no other
We have several luxury Yorkshire cottages which are lucky enough to enjoy fabulous views of the surrounding landscape, but I suspect Higher Scarcliffe tops the pile. It’s just breath-taking – a panoramic view of the Yorkshire Dales, stretching right up to the famous three peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. Almost every room in the house enjoys these views, so even in the colder months it’s a constant source of pleasure. And in the summer, well the patio to the front of the house is perhaps the finest private viewing spot in Yorkshire!
5. Eat, drink and be merry
As is true of much of the Yorkshire Dales, Higher Scarcliffe is surrounded by some excellent gastro-pubs and restaurants. A thirty minute walk will take you to the award winning Bull at Broughton. Try the paddle of real ale before tucking into some fine, locally sourced food. The Tempest Arms is just a little further and also a very good option for lunch or dinner. And within a short drive you will find the renowned Angel Inn at Hetton – the perfect spot for Sunday lunch.
Higher Scarcliffe is a 3-bedroom luxury holiday cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. With the use of a sofa bed housed on a mezzanine floor in the sitting room, it sleeps up to 8 adults comfortably. It’s available for short breaks and longer holidays throughout the year.
