We had mixed feelings about our stay here. The setting itself is lovely, very peaceful, and we particularly enjoyed the morning sunrises. However, unfortunately the standard of cleanliness and some aspects of the accommodation really let it down for us. There were cobwebs in many areas, along with quite a lot of accumulated dust. A simple long-hRead moreandled duster would have made a huge difference. We also found evidence of previous occupants and ended up cleaning the floors, cupboards, door jambs and even some of the walls ourselves before we felt properly settled. My husband was literally on his hands and knees with bleach and a cloth. There was also a large accumulation of dust underneath the bed, and both the wardrobe and the drawer beneath it were dusty. This was particularly frustrating because we had paid an additional 25 cleaning fee per dog. Having paid extra for cleaning, we did resent having to spend part of our arrival cleaning the cottage ourselves before we could properly settle in. There were some maintenance issues too. Several floor tiles were very loose, which really ought to be addressed, and the sofa was uncomfortable because the seat cushions continually slid forward. Privacy was another concern for us. The curtains are very thin, voile-style curtains, and as the cottages are overlooked by the farmhouse we did not feel they provided sufficient privacy, particularly after dark when it appeared very easy to see inside. I personally found the foam mattress too hard and very warm, although my husband slept perfectly well on it, so this is obviously subjective. Although dogs are allowed, I would describe the cottages as dog-accepting rather than especially dog-friendly. There is no private secure garden attached to the accommodation and the outside space is shared between the three cottages. Our little dogs could easily wander into the area belonging to another cottage. We were fortunate that the other cottages were mostly unoccupied during our stay, but I think this could be quite difficult if all three were occupied by guests with dogs. The proximity to the horses/stables also meant one of our dogs never really settled because she was continually alert to noises and movement outside. I accept that we perhaps should have studied the listing more carefully, but we hadn't appreciated quite how close the accommodation was to the stables. The location is attractive and rural, although for us it was perhaps a little too far out from the places we wanted to visit. Overall, this could be a very pleasant place to stay with more attention paid to cleaning, maintenance, privacy and the practicalities for guests bringing dogs. The beautiful setting is definitely its strongest point, but unfortunately we wouldn't choose to stay again. Hide

A good location for exploring the area. Very comfortable, very clean and well appointed. Ideal for two people with dogs. The garden is not enclosed but good walks are near-to-hand.

We had a wonderful few days at Clematis Cottage. The owner came to welcome us soon after we arrived and asked us to contact her if we needed anything (we didnt). The cottage has been well planned and was ideal for us and our dog, we loved staying there. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was excellent and there were some lovely walks from theRead more door. There wasnt a great deal of information in the cottage about walks in the area, which is unusual, but we found some great ones online. Im sure well be returning. Hide

Lovely accommodation and location. The cottage has everything you need. In a quiet, peaceful area, and within walking distance to the Fairfax Arms pub. It's close to Hemsley for shopping and to several Historic Houses and National Trust properties, if you have either membership. (And English Heritage if you want to go to Hemsley castle). Also closeRead more to Pickering for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Travelled to York for the day to look around and went via the Monk Cross park and ride. Very easy to get to and only 3.90 per adult return. Much cheaper than the car parking in York. Would recommend the cottage as a place to stay - very relaxing and a central location. Hide

This is a lovely cottage, modern inside and part of a block of converted former farm buildings. Its been really well done, and to a high standard. Lovely big bedroom above an open plan downstairs, and with a good shower room upstairs and the bonus of a downstairs loo. Really excellent property.
