This renovated farm cottage, situated next to a Grade II-listed 18th century corn mill, offers a charming holiday for families that want to relax in the North Yorkshire countryside in splendid grounds.

Discover this charming two-bedroom stone cottage nestling happily next to a Grade II Listed 18th century corn mill in Wensleydale. Set on the edge of a little hamlet, this very sweet cottage has extensive gardens including a mill pond and is surrounded by stunning countryside in every direction. There's also a decent foodie pub within walking distance.

The Mistal was an old cow shed in its former life which today has been converted into a very comfortable and surprisingly spacious holiday cottage. We love the extra wide wooden doors throughout the cottage, a reminder of the age of the building, and the handsome wooden Yorkshire slider windows.

Step inside to discover a generous family-sized kitchen which has been fitted brand new for Spring 2019 and includes a washing machine and dishwasher. There's plenty of room for four people around the kitchen table and it's a warm comfortable spot for dining. Moving next door into the sitting room, you will find another spacious area with a comfortable sofa and several other chairs. We like the eclectic style in here, with its gorgeous vintage Danish sideboard and contemporary lighting. There's a gas flame fire for those cosy evenings in and a TV/DVD player to settle down in front of. And of course, Wi-Fi is provided too. This property has top green credentials too as its heated by an eco-efficient Biomass boiler.

Make your way down a small set of stairs to find the bedrooms and family bathroom. The master bedroom has a double bed and sumptuous linen curtains. At the other end of the hall, there is a delightful twin room with white cast iron beds, perfect for little ones. The family bathroom sits between the two and has a bath with a shower overhead. Perfect for a soak in the tub after a day walking, or bathing the children after they've spent an afternoon exploring the gorgeous gardens.

Immediately to the front of the cottage is a very pleasant stone courtyard which is fully enclosed. But the star of the show has to be the extended and well-maintained grounds which are fully available for you to explore and use. They include a peaceful mill pond and a large cut lawned area, the perfect spot to throw out the picnic blanket and settle down for lunch. There are ducks and chickens wandering around and you may be lucky and spot the resident woodpecker family too. Younger children will love the football goal, swings and other outdoor toys.

For those of you who like cycling, there is a secure lock up for bike storage.

Dogs fees are charged per dog at £20.00 for up to 7 nights, £40.00 for up to 14 nights and an additional £20.00 for every week or part week thereafter.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double and 1 twin
  • 1 bathroom with bath with shower over
  • Oven/hob, microwave, kettle, washing machine
  • Gas flame fire in lounge
  • Football goal posts and net, swings and other outdoor toys for children
  • Biomass heating
  • Wi-Fi included
  • 1 dog welcome
  • Ample off road parking available
  • Pub within 1 mile, shop within 3 miles
  • Bike storage available
  • TV/DVD
  • Please note there is an unsecured mill pond within the grounds and therefore children must be supervised in the garden at all times
  • Travel cot and highchair available by request when booking

The property is set on the edge of a sleepy and very pretty little hamlet in deepest Wensleydale. There are some lovely walks right from the door, and the next village along boasts a great foodie pub. Heading west will take you over the high ground of Nidderdale and down into Pateley Bridge, a very popular and bustling market town. A few miles in the opposite direction takes you further up into Wensleydale with the wonderful Jervaulx Abbey and Brymor ice cream parlour.

The nearest town is Masham (2 miles), a gorgeous and thriving market town where handsome old Georgian buildings politely gather around a cobbled square. Every year there is a famous sheep fair held in the square. There are lots of delights to discover in the town including an excellent fine dining restaurant, a host of lovely cafes, a top-notch wine shop and several very good butchers. And if you enjoy a tipple or two, it's also home to the world-famous Black Sheep & Theakstons Breweries too. You can visit both, sample their wares in their own pubs and take some home for later too!

The property is also just a short drive to Middleham (10 miles), one of Yorkshire's loveliest villages. Famous for its castle (once home to Richard III) it's also home to several racehorse trainers; you will see and hear the horses being led through the village up to the gallops every day. And to top it off there is a lovely collection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Or how about a morning visiting the charming market town of Leyburn (12 miles). Leyburn is an archetypal slice of Dales market town life. You'll find traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around the handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby historic town of Richmond (20 miles) is similar in many ways and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.

There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights all within close range. Aysgarth Falls (20 miles), Bolton Castle (18 miles) and the gorgeous villages of West Burton (25 miles) and Askrigg (25 miles) are relatively near, so there’s lots of choice for things to do if you want to get out and about. If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker's paradise. And there are plenty of options for cycling too in this Tour De France country.

This property is personally managed by Phil.

A cosy well maintained cottage in a lovely unspoilt area. Enjoyed walking freely in the grounds. The four runner ducks were very amusing. Problem with the water pump meaning four of us couldn't have proper showers for the 4 days we stayed (first night was fine). Owners said we had 'drained the tank' but I don't see how this is possible when we were out all day and only had showers in the evening with gaps in-between, they had a plumbeRead morer come in to fix the issue but only worked for a matter of hours before stopping again, hope this was sorted out for next visitors as we booked for a week but left early so they had 2 days to fix it before next visitors. Property was very clean and the hamper on arrival was a nice touch.

Response from Gorgeous Cottages:

Hi Lynn, thank you for taking the time to send in you your feedback. We have spoken to the owner who has said "As in all properties repairs are occasionally necessary. The heating engineer initially identified an air lock and has now replaced the pump. Hot showers were available throughout the week, just not with the added pressure from the pump." We are really happy you found the property clean and the hamper was a nice welcome for you. Yorkshire has so much to offer and we do hope you come back soon. Take Care Marion Hide
