Helmsley is located on the south-eastern edge of the North York Moors, which has a landscape like no other; it's a place of heather-covered hills, ancient woodlands and lazy rivers winding through lush green valleys. If you want to get away from it all, take a trip to the top of the high central moorlands. The famous Blakey Ridge (16 miles) affords some of the best views in the country and, if walking is your thing, you are surrounded on all sides by some truly stunning routes.

Helmsley itself is well known as a foodie’s haven and has an abundance of good restaurants, tea rooms and independent shops. From Helmsley, you can also join the popular National Trail, the Cleveland Way, which skirts along the western and northern edge of the National Park before heading down the coast to Filey.

Attractive town, Kirkbymoorside (6.5 miles), also has much to offer including a gallery, antique shops, tea rooms, deli, wine shop and butchers. There's also a great market on Wednesdays. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole (9.5 miles) is another picturesque village where you can watch artisan craftsmen/women at the Craft Workshops, visit Ryedale Folk Museum or have a bite to eat in one of the several pubs and cafes.

Market town, Pickering (13.5 miles), is popular with visitors. It’s perfect for a relaxing wander around its pretty houses, shops and tearooms. Grand Georgian architecture stands alongside cosy traditional cottages to create a picture-postcard location with several excellent restaurants, pubs and cafes in the town. The wonderful North York Moors Railway starts in Pickering where you can catch a steam train to Whitby and back again through some of the most picturesque countryside in Yorkshire.

Further afield, the North Yorkshire Coast is worth the drive for a lovely day out. The gothic town of Whitby (34 miles), associated with Dracula author, Bram Stoker, has a stunning, ancient abbey perched on the cliffs as well as small, winding streets to explore and is well worth a visit, as is the seaside resort of Scarborough (31 miles). Take a day trip to either of these places to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Yorkshire's coastline.

For family days out, head to theme park and zoo, Flamingo Land, which is 15 miles away, or Eden Camp, a fascinating modern history museum, which is 20 miles away. You're also close to Castle Howard (14 miles) and York (24.5 miles).

Lovely brand new cottage in the beautiful town of Helmsley. The cottage was ideal for a family of four, spacious and the views of the sheep were beautiful. Ideal place for walking into Helmsley for a meal/ cake/ ice cream or a day trip to Castle Howard, Flamingo Land or York.

Offering infinite opportunities for lovers of the great outdoors, the wild expanse of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in North and West Yorkshire is a glorious mix of awe-inspiring scenery, imposing castles, characterful Dales' villages and drystone walls. While to the east, the North York Moors National Park offers atmospheric moorland, fragrant pine forests and charming towns tucked away within steep-sloped valleys. Extending all the way to the Yorkshire Coast, you can even experience a traditional day at the seaside at popular resorts including Whitby, Flamborough and Scarborough. It's a beautiful terrain to explore.
