Now I must confess that I’m a bit of a newbie to geocaching, but have recently been introduced to it by the owners of the family friendly Curlew Cottage in Goathland. The concept is a simple one – all you need is a GPS enabled smartphone and the Geocaching App to get started.
It’s the modern-day version of a treasure hunt and a fun activity that gets families (or friends) working together while getting some fresh air in the lungs.
Simply download the free Geocaching App onto your smartphone. Register as a user and you can then start searching for treasure near to you. Type in any location or postcode to see the nearby Geocaches in map or list format.
Locating the Geocache
Once you have decided which Geocache you would like to go for, use your phone to get to roughly the right location. You will then be given a clue to help you find the exact spot which is usually in a tree trunk or under a stone.
Finding the treasure
When you get to the spot you should find the treasure chest (well a container that at the very least contains a notepad and pen so you can record your name). The size of the container does vary and some will have a selection of toys or other items that can be traded for your own.
The only rules are that if you do take something you should leave something of your own behind for the next group to find.
