The village of Hovingham, is found nestled in hills a few miles from the North York Moors National Park. It is a village proud of its pub, The Malt Shovel, that offers a warm welcome, good food and a good selection of wines and beers. Also, there is an arts venue called The Shed, where locals and visitors can enjoy live poetry and music events. Take to the Howardian Hills, a nearby AONB with an abundance of long-distance walking trails that can be explored for panoramic views across the dales and hills. Within 10 miles of the village there are the market towns of Helmsley, Malton and Pickering, as well as a great range of historic properties: Nunnington Hall; Castle Howard; Newburgh Priory; and Duncombe Park. Visit Helmsley for its spectacular ruined castle, partially sacked by Oliver Cromwell’s men in the 16th-century. Helmsley is also excellent for restaurants, shops and cafes. If you like crumbling, history edifices, head a few miles further on from Helmsley to iconic Rievaulx Abbey, a great location for photo opportunities.
