About The French House
Welcome to The French House, a beautiful 3-bedroom barn conversion set on the cusp of a pretty village in the Yorkshire Dales. Lots to love about this holiday cottage including its gorgeous interiors, outdoor hot tub and wonderful setting within a rolling country estate.
Subject to a recent refurbishment, the property is a lesson in understated elegance. Soft Farrow & Ball tones compliment the luxurious furnishings and sophisticated touches throughout. It's hard to believe this stone barn was once home to the estate's cattle.
Access to The French House via dual aspect arched doorways; step inside to discover a beautiful spacious living room with exposed painted floorboards underfoot. An open fire sits at the heart of this room making it the perfect cosy space to retreat to each evening. Take your pick from two huge grey sofas and settle down to catch a movie on the LCD TV. A DVD Player and Wi-Fi are also provided. Plenty of Hygge factor in here with soft lightening and the crackle of wood on the fire. Dashes of lime green on the curtains and cushions complete the chic but comfortable look.
The kitchen sits next door and echoes the same stylish appeal. Grey units gather around a dining table with quirky handmade barrel stools underneath. The cupboards are fully equipped with everything you'll need for your stay and a dishwasher, washer/dryer is included for your convenience.
There are 3 bedrooms in The French House, each with their own unique feature beds. The first bedroom is set on the ground floor. This generous room boasts a fabulous king size cast iron bedstead and a wow-factor wet-room set into the corner of the room. The remaining bedrooms are both upstairs. Bedroom 2 features a king size French 4-poster bed with exposed beams overhead, a romantic and dramatic room. The final bedroom offers the option of a super-king or two single beds; perfect if you have children or adults with you who prefer their own space at night. There is a further wet-room style bathroom up here with a walk-in shower.
There is much to love outside this luxurious property too. To the rear you have a delightful enclosed courtyard with outdoor furniture, fairy lights and a BBQ for those balmy summer evenings. A babbling water garden adds to the peaceful ambiance.
This courtyard is also home to the log-burning hot tub which is exclusively for guests at The French House. (Available throughout the year) To the front of the barn is a large shared courtyard, another very pleasant and sheltered space to enjoy your morning coffee or afternoon G & T.
Beyond the gardens guests are more than welcome to walk around the estate and meet the local wildlife. The cross-country walk by the church and down to the village pub is highly recommended! For little ones there is also a play area just a few hundred yards from the barn.
Local Area
The French House has a beautiful location set within a large estate on the cusp of the Yorkshire Dales. With less than an hour's drive to the coast and the City of York it's an ideal basecamp from which to strike out and discover these unique Yorkshire locations. Reeth and the stunning landscapes of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are also within easy reach, and its well-placed for a day trip over the Lakes if you want to explore there too.
The property is set on the edge of a very pretty village. There's a great dining pub just a short walk away and if you're a bit of a foodie there are several more excellent dining pubs in the area including The Morritt Arms Hotel, the Black Bull at Moulton and the Shoulder of Mutton at Middleton Tyas. Mainsgill, an award winning Deli, tea-room and farm shop is also just minutes from the house. It's also the perfect location if you enjoy walking. There are lots of beautiful walks from the doorstep and in fact its well-known as a great starting point for walking - seasoned walkers come from miles around to set off from the village.
This stunning Yorkshire Cottage is just a few miles away from Richmond, an historic market town with much to offer the discerning holiday-maker. Explore the cobbled market square or head up towards Richmond Castle for a slice of Yorkshire history. Just a short drive through Richmond takes you into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales proper. Head up towards Reeth and on towards Hawes in Wensleydale for a true taste of this magnificent countryside. Stop at the Wensleydale Heiffer for lunch before heading back to the comfort of your cosy cottage.
North of the cottage is the charming town of Barnard Castle. Recently listed as one of the top 10 places to live in the UK, it's a pretty little place with a host of shops, cafes and pubs to explore. The excellent Bowes Museum is here and is well worth a visit. And as the name would suggest there's an historic castle to explore too.
Further south, you'll find the pretty market town of Northallerton where handsome Georgian houses line the long main street. The wonderful Betty's Tearooms is here as is a fantastic local deli, Lewis & Cooper's Food Emporium and of course the quintessentially Yorkshire department store of Barkers.
To take in the North York Moors head further south still and brave it up Sutton Bank, the view from the top said by some to be the finest in all of England. The gorgeous market town of Helmsley makes for the perfect pit-stop and if you feel like something special for lunch make your way to the Star Inn at Harome.
And if you feel like a spot of pampering, there's also a fantastic Spa just a few miles down the road.
