Old Cartmel Cottage is an exquisite one-bedroom holiday cottage set in the heart of Middleham, one of the prettiest villages in the Yorkshire Dales. This 4 Star romantic cottage is just perfect for two and boasts a grown up, sophisticated style. Perfect for walkers and those who enjoy cafes, pubs and restaurants on the doorstep...
We just love this bijou stone-built cottage with its elegant decor and well thought out spaces. Step into the handsome porch, take off your boots and rest a while; the little window seat in here is the best seat in the house for spotting the race-horses trotting up the village en route to the gallops.
Make your way into the open plan living space, home to the lounge, kitchen and dining area. Classic style blends with contemporary comfort in here and underfloor heating is a welcome addition. It manages to feel comfortable, stylish and cosy all at once.
Pop open a bottle of something, grab a good book and settle down on the sofa for an afternoon of sheer bliss! An electric fire with a wood-burning stove effect keeps everything nice and toasty. There's a Freeview TV with a DVD player if you want to bring some of your old favourite movies and Wi-Fi is available too.
The compact but perfectly formed kitchen comes equipped with everything you'll need. There's an electric oven and ceramic hob, fridge and microwave for your convenience. There is also a small freezer under the stairs - well you'll need ice for your Gin & Tonic! Rustle up a romantic dinner and settle at the quaint dining table.
Time for bed, head up the charming bespoke wooden staircase to the gorgeous bedroom. The style up here echoes the same traditional but well-heeled look. Stretch out on the bed and enjoy a birds-eye view of the village outside. This peaceful and elegant room is a joy to wake up in each morning, hidden away from the hustle bustle of real life!
Next door you'll find the bathroom featuring a generous walk-shower and WC. Big deep windowsills remind you of the history in this cottage.
To the front of Old Cartmel Cottage is a very pleasant and well maintained courtyard garden. It's a heavenly spot for lunch al fresco in the warmer months and the perfect place to catch the comings and goings of Yorkshire village life. If you're feel like a walk, you can head out from the door - there are lots in every direction!
Old Cartmel Cottage is set in the heart of Middleham village in Wensleydale, one of Yorkshire's loveliest villages. Famous for its castle (once home to Richard III) it's also home to several race-horse trainers; you will see and hear the horses being lead through the village up to the gallops every day. And to top it off there is a lovely collection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. We love it so much it features in our Top 10 Prettiest Yorkshire Villages - the perfect location for a holiday cottage!
Near the cottage is a charming tearooms if you fancy a treat at elevenses, and for dinner you can opt for pub grub at the Richard III traditional pub or perhaps some Italian food at the renowned White Swan. You can order a take-out pizza from here too. There's also a village store and a couple of bric-a-brac shops to mooch around. Just a few miles out of the village is the fantastic attraction The Forbidden Corner. Regularly voted the best family attraction in Yorkshire, it's also well worth a look even if there are no children in your party.
In the opposite direction you'll find the charming market town of Leyburn. Leyburn is an archetypical slice of Dales market town life. You'll find traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around the handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby historic town of Richmond is similar in many ways, and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.
There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights all within close range of Old Cartmel Cottage. Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle are just a few miles away and the gorgeous villages of West Burton and Askrigg are within easy driving distance, so lots of choice for things to do if you want to get out and about. If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker's paradise. And there are plenty of options for cycling too in Tour De France country. Our concierge will be more than happy to recommend some walks and cycle routes for you if required.
And when you need to refuel stop at one of the areas many excellent gastro pubs. Our favourites include the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton and the Blue Lion at East Witton, all within a short drive of the cottage.
