Gathering your friends for a country cottage break is a great way to spend quality time with them. You can split the cost of a luxury holiday cottage between you so can push the boat out that bit more.
With a UK staycation you can finish work on Friday and be on your way to a fabulous short break. Yorkshire has something for everyone from pretty market towns such as Helmsley and Pickering, vibrant cities like York and idyllic villages like Reeth and Pateley Bridge.
Enjoy gorgeous walks on a short break to Reeth in Swaledale
You can head to the coast, venture to a Michelin Star restaurant, and explore gorgeous countryside on a walk or bike ride.
Choosing the perfect holiday cottage
Once you know how many people will be coming you can start searching for the perfect holiday cottage. Things to look for include the number of bedrooms and the number of bathrooms (you really don't want to be queuing for the shower each morning).
Decide on the things that are important to you – whether this is a log-burning fire, a garden with a BBQ, a pub within walking distance or all of the above! If you are planning on taking any dogs with you than make sure the cottage is dog friendly. Similarly. you’ll need a family-friendly property if children are coming too.
Make sure there are lots of good quality photos, so you can see how the holiday home will look and that you can see all the key information at a glance.
Where’s your ideal location?
There’s lots of rural spots in Yorkshire to explore
Your ideal location is likely to depend on what you and your friends like to do on a cottage holiday. If you want to enjoy some peace and quiet and some scenic walks then look for somewhere rural.
Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale.
If you want a choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants within walking distance then look for somewhere like Helmsley or Pateley Bridge.
Helmsley is a great choice for a weekend break.
There’s lots of choices of things to do in Yorkshire, everything from top class spas to cheese-making lessons. You’ll find stately homes and museums, popular seaside towns like Whitby and an abundance of nature to spot.

Of course, you may just want to relax in a hot tub and catch up on old times!
Food and Drink
The beauty of a self-catering holiday cottage is that it’s up to you whether you eat in, eat out or do a mixture of the two.
You may well be able to organise a supermarket shop to be delivered to the property to make life easier. Many holiday homes will also come with a welcome hamper of handy items.
If you are planning to eat in, then a well-equipped kitchen and good-sized dining table is a must. You can even look for an outside table to eat alfresco in the summer months.
Cosy pub in Burnsall
Popular Yorkshire pubs and restaurants will need booking in advance.
If you are planning to eat out then research pubs and restaurants nearby and don’t forget to book. If you need a table of eight on a busy Saturday night then it’s unlikely you’ll just be able to walk in!
A holiday cottage with a hot tub?
Don’t forget that a luxury holiday cottage with a hot tub can get booked up many months in advance, particularly for weekend breaks so you’ll need to plan in advance.
Hot tubs are especially popular, and these properties will tend to get booked up first.
Other facilities could include saunas, games rooms and separate snugs but again, the earlier you book the more choice you will have.
